President Donald Trump said the United States already has safeguards and legal authority to regulate and prosecute artificial intelligence companies, pushing back against industry calls to slow development.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that the only guardrails AI needs are provided by a strong and smart president. He also said there was a “sick conspiracy” against AI and data centers and claimed China would benefit from doubts about US development.
The comments followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal for a three-step framework to slow AI development and create more time to manage its risks. The proposal was endorsed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI owner Elon Musk.
The debate intensified after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, saying people developing AI believe it could kill humans by the end of the decade. AI-linked stocks fell sharply worldwide on Monday after industry leaders called for a slower pace of development, Reuters reported.

Trump said his administration had already used its powers against Anthropic and would continue stopping people from doing things it considers harmful. Senator Mark Warner also spoke with Amodei and Altman about AI safety concerns over the weekend, according to a spokesperson.
Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week. Reuters previously reported that the two countries planned separate talks on AI risks led by lower-level officials.
