President Donald Trump pushed back against the pacing of AI development by top U.S. companies on Monday, specifically taking aim at Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who during the weekend published an essay calling for the move.
In a social media publication, Trump said that the "only control or "guardrails" that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!"
He went on to claim that the "Trump Administration has stopped AI "people" from doing bad, or potentially bad, "things," like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a "perfect little angel"" and said he will continue to do so. Trump did not specify what he stopped the company from doing.
"We already have tremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies! There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China. WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!" Trump finished.
The Chinese government also rejected the move by U.S. CEOs. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, said "fear mongering, confrontation, competition will just disrupt [the] process of global AI governance," according to a translation published by Reuters.
Elsewhere, Beijing's Minister of State Security, Chen Yixin, called for the accelerated building of an AI security risk prevention and control system, saying AI has become "the main battleground for global technological competition and a new arena for strategic rivalry among major powers."
State newspaper The Global Times also said the call by Anthropic's Dario Amodei for a slowdown of AI development is "hypocritical and short-sighted."
The move, the outlet said, actually sought to "curb China's AI development through technological barriers and regulatory monopolies, uphold Washington's monopolistic hegemony in cutting-edge technology, and exclude China from the global AI governance system."
It went on to claim that excluding China from global innovation would "significantly increase the trial-and-error costs and risks of loss of control in global AI development".
Amodei had said in his essay that a swarm of rogue AI agents could take over the internet in as little as six months if the pace is not slowed. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and co-chair of Google DeepMind Demis Hassabis all endorsed Amodei's message.
