A shuttered Midwestern reactor is getting a second life, powered by federal dollars and Google's appetite for carbon-free electricity.
Iowa’s only nuclear power plant has been dark since August 2020. The Trump administration just decided it shouldn’t stay that way.
The Department of Energy closed a loan agreement of up to $1.9 billion with NextEra Energy on September 8, 2026, to fund the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center near Palo, Iowa. The plant ran for 45 years before shutting down, and if everything goes to plan, it will be producing electricity again by early 2029.
Why a retired reactor is suddenly worth nearly $2 billion #
Duane Arnold is a 615-megawatt facility, enough output to power roughly 500,000 homes. That kind of reliable, around-the-clock baseload power is exactly what the energy grid is increasingly short on, particularly as AI data centers drive electricity demand to levels the grid was not designed to handle.
NextEra has already lined up a buyer for most of that power. The company signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with Google, primarily to supply its AI data centers. About 50 megawatts of the plant’s output is reserved for local customers, with Google taking the rest under a long-term contract that locks in revenue across a quarter-century horizon.
The federal bet on nuclear baseload #
The Trump administration has positioned nuclear power as a cornerstone of its energy policy, framing reliable baseload capacity as both an economic and national security priority. Restarting shuttered plants is faster and cheaper than building new ones from scratch, which makes mothballed facilities like Duane Arnold attractive targets for federal support.
Regulatory approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is still required before the plant can come back online. The NRC process is not a rubber stamp, and Q1 2029 is a target, not a guarantee.
The project is expected to generate nearly 1,500 construction jobs during the restart phase, along with more than 450 permanent operational positions once the plant is running. Over the 25-year life of the Google PPA, NextEra estimates the project will contribute more than $9 billion to Iowa’s economy.
What this means for the energy and tech landscape #
For Google, the arrangement is part of a wider push to match its electricity consumption with carbon-free power on a 24/7 basis rather than just on an annual average. The company has signed similar deals with other nuclear operators as it tries to square its climate commitments with the enormous power demands of its AI infrastructure.
For Iowa, the restart means the return of the state’s sole nuclear facility, a plant that operated for more than four decades before its 2020 shutdown. The shutdown at the time was framed as an economic decision, with the plant struggling to compete against cheap natural gas and subsidized renewables.
