Touchgrass - ai A developer built touchgrass, an open-source AI tool that interprets users' goals and recommends practical offline activities such as walking, exercising, exploring nearby places, or learning a new skill to reduce screen time. The project was developed with open-source AI technologies and modern web tooling, with the AI component structured so it can be extended or swapped for other open-source models, and an AI coding agent was used during development for ideation, feature work, and debugging. This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: touchgrass-ai — An Open-Source AI Tool for Getting People Offline I built touchgrass , an open-source AI-powered tool designed to help people spend less time on screens and more time engaging with the real world. The project uses AI to understand the user's goals and suggest practical offline activities such as walking, exercising, exploring nearby places, learning a new skill, or spending time with friends and family. It is designed for anyone who wants a simple push to step away from their screen and take meaningful action in the real world. I built this project using open-source AI technologies and modern web development tools. The AI component is used to understand user input and generate useful, personalized recommendations. The application is structured so that the AI functionality can be extended or replaced with other open-source models in the future. Key technologies used: The goal was to keep the project simple, accessible, and easy for other developers to understand and contribute to. The goal was to keep the project simple, accessible, and easy for other developers to understand and contribute to. Open innovation made this project possible because developers can experiment with AI without being completely dependent on closed platforms. Using open-source models and tools gives developers more control over how AI is used, makes experimentation more accessible, and allows the community to improve the technology together. For this project, open innovation made it possible to build an AI experience that can be inspected, modified, extended, and shared with other developers. I believe open-source AI can make useful technology more accessible while encouraging collaboration and creativity. I used an AI coding agent during development to explore ideas, implement features, debug issues, and improve the project. This is an individual submission.
