This Week in Effect - 134 Effect, the TypeScript library for the AI era, released its weekly update detailing a hardening effort with approximately 130 commits focused on correctness fixes across modules, plus performance optimizations, native TLS socket support, and a Schema internals refactor ahead of its stable release. The update also announced community meetups in New York City on September 24 and San Francisco on September 30, and Effect Days conference on December 9–11, 2026. Hi Effecters Welcome back to This Week in Effect, your weekly update of the latest developments in the Effect community and ecosystem. Effect is the TypeScript library for the AI era, helping developers build complex, synchronous, and asynchronous programs. One key feature that sets Effect apart is how it leverages structured concurrency to provide features such as async cancellation and safe resource management, making it easier to build robust, scalable, and efficient programs. To get started, below you’ll find links to our documentation and our guide for installing Effect. Enjoy Recent major updates: Another intense week on the RC hardening effort, with the vast majority of the ~130 commits being narrow, targeted correctness fixes across nearly every module in the library. Alongside that sweep, several more substantial changes landed too. - Performance pass : Reduced allocations in Effect’s core primitives and fiber runtime, reduced per-request allocations in the HTTP and RPC servers, and improved overall HttpRouter request throughput. Also optimized synchronous Schema parsing for lower overhead on the hot path. - Native TLS sockets : Added in-place TLS socket upgrade support, along with NodeSocket.makeTls and NodeSocketServer.makeTls for first-class TLS socket construction on Node . - Schema internals refactor : Refactored Schema’s internal representation APIs and hid the SchemaAST / SchemaIssue class implementations behind a cleaner public surface, as part of stabilizing Schema’s internals ahead of the stable release. - ByteSize : Refactored ByteSize as a branded bigint and added an exact-value constructor module, improving precision for byte-size arithmetic. - PersistedQueue : Completed a dedicated hardening and optimization pass on PersistedQueue . - Cluster : Fixed the empty shard-lock liveness probe to run on the shared pool instead of blocking on a dedicated one. - Graph : Simplified the Graph protocol and its runtime guard. - Systematic correctness sweep : The audit continued across dozens of modules — including Schema , SchemaBinary , Stream , Sink , Chunk , Struct , Headers , Prompt , Socket , IndexedDb , McpServer , and several AI provider integrations — fixing edge cases in encoding, decoding, serialization, and state preservation that surfaced during the RC review. - Documentation : Updated the v3-to-v4 migration guidance for Socket and typeclass changes. Absolute champs 🥇 - Dillon i’m confident in saying that i will never start another typescript application or project without @EffectTS https://twitter.com/EffectTS it’s reached critical enough adoption, provides distinct tailwinds to agents, and has great cloudflare support that it’d be a mistake not to at this point - Thank you, Matt 🫡 It used to be "use TS, not JS" Now, for backend, it's "use Effect, not just TS" Took a long time for me to drop my scepticism but I 100% agree with Dillon. i’m confident in saying that i will never start another typescript application or project without @EffectTS it’s reached critical enough adoption, provides distinct tailwinds to agents, and has great cloudflare support that it’d be a mistake not to at this point 15 months later and I would probably now describe the Effect docs as 'exemplary'. Really well laid out, with a great intro, lots of progressive disclosure. They even have an awesome description of what an Effect is. An Effect is a value that fully describes a program - what it Effect docs constructive criticism thread I feel like the docs are lacking a real description about what an Effect is. I don't feel what an Effect is. - Who needs Fable 5.1 when you have Tim Smart - cit.
