This Week in Effect - 133 Effect, the TypeScript library for the AI era, released updates to its v4 Release Candidate, achieving zero external dependencies in the core package and introducing a native PostgreSQL protocol client. The team also reworked Schema's Arbitrary generation, added WebSocket client support across runtimes, and removed built-in MessagePack support. Effect Days will be held in Italy on December 9–11, 2026, with early bird tickets closing September 1st. Hi Effecters Welcome back to This Week in Effect, your weekly update of the latest developments in the Effect community and ecosystem. Effect is the TypeScript library for the AI era, helping developers build complex, synchronous, and asynchronous programs. One key feature that sets Effect apart is how it leverages structured concurrency to provide features such as async cancellation and safe resource management, making it easier to build robust, scalable, and efficient programs. To get started, below you’ll find links to our documentation and our guide for installing Effect. Enjoy Recent major updates: Technology Effect v4 RC updates. The team kept up the pace on the RC hardening effort this week, while also landing a major overhaul of Schema’s Arbitrary generation and a native PostgreSQL protocol client. With this week’s improvements, Effect v4 core package has no external dependencies. 🚀 Effect v4 core package now has no external dependencies. Coming to an RC near you soon. @EffectTS https://twitter.com/EffectTS Native Arbitraries : Reworked Schema’s Arbitrary generation and shrinking with a native implementation, replacing the previous approach for more predictable and efficient property-based test data generation. - Native PostgreSQL client : Replaced the pg dependency with a native PgProtocol client in @effect/sql-pg , reducing external dependencies and improving control over the connection lifecycle. - WebSocket support : Added WebSocket client support across runtimes Node, Bun, Deno, browser , and fixed the Node platform writing HTTP responses onto already-upgraded WebSocket connections. - Schema : Added partial matching to Schema.TaggedUnion , optimized synchronous schema parsing for better performance, and fixed Schema class equivalence derivation. - Breaking changes : Removed built-in MessagePack support and the MIME dependency from @effect/platform-node , continuing the RC-cycle trend of trimming the dependency surface. Standardized Config constructor naming for consistency across the module. - Cluster : Bounded teardown interrupt classification, ensured transient routing states are never surfaced for persisted messages, and defaulted TCP cluster serialization to SchemaBinary . - AI & streaming tools : Executed streaming tool handlers eagerly, supporting interruption and synthesized results instead of buffering the full response. - CLI : Added context-based CLI prompt themes for more customizable interactive prompts. - Bug fixes : Fixed readonly SQLite transactions, restored the Effect.timeout error message, aligned type IDs with module paths, normalized collection count handling, preserved response part assignability after narrowing, fixed chunked multipart parsing after file parts, aligned PGlite listen behavior with PostgreSQL, terminated Stream.fromEventListener after one item when once: true is set, and fixed tagsExhaustive inference for Effect.fn handlers. - Documentation : Recommended Effect.fnUntraced in the AI guide, and documented Match and RPC migration changes for teams upgrading from v3. Michael Arnaldi. going forward we will always ship a regular API but there will also be an optional effect version this applies to our plugin api, js client, embedded sdk, ai package, etc - effect-mq https://github.com/TeamWarp/effect-mq - Background jobs for Effect. By Adam Rankin.Jobs vs. Workflows I recommend reaching for effect cluster first. We use it, it’s great and capable, and the @EffectTS https://twitter.com/EffectTS team are incredible. So why build effect-mq? Both jobs and workflows have their place. I built this primarily because we were using bullmq for background - No more excuses Replying to @JLarky https://twitter.com/JLarky/status/2092628375110037789 Effect, the code we were all too lazy to do before - 👀 Replying to @mattrobrob https://twitter.com/mattrobrob/status/2091894236182454518 Keep on the lookout for xstate/effect - My wife heard me mention @EffectTS https://twitter.com/EffectTS way too many times and finally asked “what the hell is that?” 😨 So I used @grok https://twitter.com/grok to build her a little educational mini-game about it. Latest Grok Build + Grok 4.6 — really happy with the UI/UX here.
