Google is putting money into the company and is also going to be providing it with cloud compute, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has gone out of his way to frame the exits as amicable. But buried inside the deck the founders used to introduce their new company is a slide that says a lot more about why Google’s AI dominance has been so hard for rivals to dislodge, and why that dominance might now be a little easier to chip away at.\n\nThe slide, titled “Management/Team Building experience,” is essentially a résumé dump. Dean co-founded and ran Google Brain at its peak of roughly 600 people, before going on to lead Google Research and AI teams that grew to about 4,400 people. Vinyals managed teams of up to 250 people and built the Gemini pre-training team from scratch. Le ran teams of up to 60. Dean and Sanjay were among Google’s first 75 employees, and Dean and Vinyals were the founders and co-technical leads of the Gemini project itself, with Le running post-training. It’s the kind of slide a startup shows investors to prove it knows how to hire and manage people at scale, not just do research.\n\nBut the section that could be the most isn’t the management numbers. It’s the list right below it — a roll call of AI founders who spent time working inside teams run by Dean, Ghemawat, Le or Vinyals before going off to start their own companies. Read together, it amounts to a map of practically the entire modern AI industry, and it explains why so many of the researchers who built the current wave of chatbots, coding tools and research assistants all seem to share the same DNA.\n\n## The frontier labs\n\n**Anthropic**, founded by Dario Amodei along with Chris Olah and Tom Brown, sits right at the top of the list. Amodei has gone on record repeatedly about the scale and pace of Anthropic’s growth since he left Google to join OpenAI and later split off to start his own lab. Olah and Brown both worked under Dean’s Google Brain and Research umbrella before becoming founding members of the company.\n\n**OpenAI** gets two separate mentions. Ilya Sutskever, who [later founded Safe Superintelligence](https://officechai.com/ai/have-research-worthy-of-scaling-up-ilya-sutskevers-ssi-announces-big-new-investment-from-nvidia/) after his own turbulent exit from OpenAI, spent time at Google Brain before that. Wojciech Zaremba, one of OpenAI’s original co-founders, is also credited to the Dean-era Brain team.\n\n**xAI** shows up with three names attached — Igor Babuschkin, Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang. Babuschkin joined Elon Musk’s company as chief engineer straight out of DeepMind and has [since left to start his own venture fund](https://officechai.com/ai/xai-co-founder-jimmy-ba-quits-6-of-12-co-founders-have-now-left/), while Dai and Zhang were both part of the founding technical team that built Grok.\n\n## The applied science bets\n\nGiven that Discovery Loop is pitching itself as a company for automating scientific discovery, it’s fitting that several names on the slide come from labs working at the intersection of AI and hard science. Sergey Levine and Chelsea Finn, both Stanford professors, co-founded **Physical Intelligence**, which builds foundation models for robotics. Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini, known for their chip-design research at Google, are listed against a company called Ricursive. David Silver, the DeepMind veteran behind AlphaGo, AlphaZero and MuZero, [is credited with founding Ineffable](https://officechai.com/uncorporate-jobs/these-ai-researchers-quit-to-launch-their-own-startups/), continuing the reinforcement-learning work he became famous for at DeepMind.\n\n## The companies everyone already knows\n\nA few names on the slide need little introduction. **Mistral**, Europe’s most valuable AI startup, was co-founded by Arthur Mensch, who [spent three years at Google DeepMind in Paris](https://officechai.com/ai/most-valuable-ai-startups-in-europe-2026/) working on projects including the Flamingo model before starting the company with two former Meta researchers.\n\n**Perplexity** founder Aravind Srinivas interned across OpenAI, DeepMind and Google before starting his AI search engine, and has since [become one of the more outspoken voices](https://officechai.com/ai/perplexity-ceo-aravind-srinivas-on-how-coding-is-going-from-autocomplete-to-auto-outcomes/) in the industry on everything from SEO to the future of coding.\n\n**Cohere**, the Toronto-based enterprise AI company, was co-founded by Aidan Gomez and Nick Frosst, both of whom passed through Google Brain. Gomez was still an intern when he co-authored the “Attention Is All You Need” paper that introduced the transformer architecture, and he’s since [talked publicly](https://officechai.com/ai/when-human-data-is-too-expensive-synthetic-data-could-be-be-used-to-train-ai-models-cohere-ceo-aidan-gomez/) about how Cohere now trains its models on mostly synthetic data.\n\n**Character AI** is represented by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who left Google in 2021 after the company declined to release their chatbot Meena, only to sell Character AI back to Google in a deal reportedly worth $2.7 billion. Shazeer [has since moved on again](https://officechai.com/ai/google-ai-veteran-and-transformers-paper-coauthor-noam-shazeer-joins-openai/), most recently to OpenAI.\n\n**Thinking Machines**, Mira Murati’s startup, appears here through Barret Zoph and Luke Metz, two of its original co-founders. Both have [since returned to OpenAI](https://officechai.com/ai/dangerous-if-a-handful-of-companies-control-ai-says-thinking-machines/) along with several of their fellow Thinking Machines co-founders, in what’s become one of the more talked-about founder exoduses in the industry this year.\n\n## The smaller names worth knowing\n\nThe rest of the slide is filled out with founders whose companies haven’t yet become household names but whose backgrounds are just as heavyweight. Liam Fedus and Ekin Dogus Cubuk, both former OpenAI and Google researchers, started Periodic. Sara Hooker, previously head of Cohere Labs, and Sudip Roy co-founded Adaption. Alex Wiltschko, who worked on Google’s smell-related machine learning research, started Osmo, a company applying AI to the sense of smell. Zhilin Yang leads Moonshot AI, the Chinese lab behind the Kimi models. Gabriel Pereyra co-founded Harvey, the legal AI company that’s become one of the [more valuable startups](https://officechai.com/ai/most-valuable-ai-startups/) built for a single professional industry. David Ha started Sakana AI in Tokyo, Andrew Dai founded Elorian, and Ian Goodfellow, the researcher who invented generative adversarial networks, is listed against Moonlake AI. Ioannis Antonoglou, a DeepMind veteran who worked alongside David Silver on AlphaGo, co-founded Reflection.\n\n## Why Google keeps making founders\n\nNone of this is new, exactly. Google Brain and DeepMind have functioned as a talent factory for the entire AI industry for close to a decade, and lists like [these](https://officechai.com/uncorporate-jobs/these-ai-researchers-quit-to-launch-their-own-startups/) tracking former Google researchers who went on to start their own companies have circulated before. What makes this particular slide notable is who’s presenting it, and why. Dean, Ghemawat, Le and Vinyals aren’t outsiders pointing at Google’s talent drain from a distance — they were the managers signing off on the performance reviews, the technical leads running the teams, the people who, in many cases, personally decided to hire the researchers who’d go on to start Anthropic, Mistral, Perplexity and the rest.\n\nThat’s the pitch Discovery Loop is making to investors: the four of them didn’t just build some of Google’s most important infrastructure over the past two and a half decades, they also built and ran the organizations that trained the people now running the rest of the AI industry. Whether that experience translates into a company that can automate scientific discovery is a separate question.
