How AI search, zero-click results, and machine consumption are changing the economics, architecture, and purpose of the modern internet. #
For most of the commercial web’s history, success depended on getting a person to arrive. Whether you ran a newspaper, a software company, a niche blog, a recipe site, a university, or an ecommerce store, the operating assumption was broadly the same: people searched, scanned results, clicked a link, landed on a page, and did something valuable there. They saw an ad, subscribed, bought a product, filled out a form, read an analysis, or at least learned the publisher’s name. The website was the destination, and search was a routing layer that sent people toward it. That is no longer a safe assumption.
The visible part of the shift is familiar. Google answers many questions directly through maps, knowledge panels, product modules, featured snippets, calculators, weather, sports results, and AI-generated summaries. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and similar systems go further: they can combine material from multiple sources into one response and satisfy the user before any external page is opened.
