For most of the commercial web’s history, success depended on getting a person to arrive. Whether you ran a newspaper, a software company, a niche blog, a recipe site, a university, or an ecommerce store, the operating assumption was broadly the same: people searched, scanned results, clicked a link, landed on a page, and did something valuable there.
