A startup in 2023 would have chosen a specialized vector database. A startup in 2026 would be insane to do that. Here’s why everything changed. #
It was March 2024 when the first startup in my network quietly migrated away from Pinecone.
They didn’t announce it. There was no dramatic blog post about why. Just an email to their team: “We’re moving vector search from Pinecone to PostgreSQL. Here’s the plan.”
I thought it was weird. Pinecone was literally built for this. A specialized vector database optimized for exactly what they needed. Why would you move away from the best tool for the job?
Then another team did it. Then another.
By the end of 2024, I started tracking the pattern. Every startup that had made the choice to use a specialized vector database (Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus) was evaluating whether to migrate away from it. None of them were migrating toward it.
Today in 2026, the pattern is undeniable. And it’s not about Pinecone being bad at what it does. It’s about PostgreSQL and MongoDB getting so good at vector search that the specialized option stopped being the obvious choice.
