Instead of pitching four-wheeled passenger cars decked out in solar panels, the company has kept the solar panels and removed one wheel, and, well… The Autocycle Solution If you guessed an autocycle is in play, that’s the ticket. Autocycles are three-wheeled vehicles. Not to be confused with three-wheeled motorcycles, autocycles feature regular front-facing seats and steering wheels, not handlebars. They were once fairly common throughout the first half of the 20th century, and they continue to occupy niche applications in some markets overseas. Here in the US, interest in autocycles fell off a cliff around midway through the 20th century. In recent years, though, open-cab, fat-tired, over-styled autocycles are experiencing a revival among gasmobile enthusiasts on the hunt for a uniquely eye-catching ride, enabled in part by US regulations that generally allow autocycles drivers to carry an ordinary driver’s license instead of a motorcycle license. Aptera prefers to use “three-wheeled vehicle” instead of autocycle, which helps to differentiate its business model from gasmobile iterations. The company has been working to crack the electric three-wheeler code with a focus on aerodynamic styling to boost battery range. The result is a sleek, futuristic vehicle that delivers on the eye-catching factor. However, Aptera is not pitching its forthcoming EV code named “Atlas” as an exercise in electrified show-offery. The HOV Advantage As for why three wheels instead of four, part of the reasoning goes to the savings on weight, which translates into savings on battery range. Aptera’s three-wheeler, though, still qualifies under California’s regular HOV rules, which enable motorcycles and autocycles to use the restricted lanes without multiple passengers, regardless of whether they are gas or electric. “Aptera is designed as a three-wheeled vehicle. In regions where three-wheeled vehicles are permitted to use HOV lanes, Aptera qualifies for that same access,” Aptera emphasizes. “This is not a temporary incentive. The point of the exercise was to demonstrate that drivers could squeeze more electricity from the car’s solar panels by parking in optimal conditions at different times. As Aptera emphasizes, the repositioning strategy is more convenient for drivers who hop in and out of their cars during the course of a day. Otherwise, parking the car in a single position yields satisfactory results. In one such test on a relatively sunny day, one position yielded 40 miles of range despite morning and late afternoon cloud cover. Aptera advises that drivers can optimize their solar gain in just one position, by parking with the front of the car facing east or west. They also note that repositioning can help offset persistent cloud cover, as demonstrated by one test in which the team repositioned the car several times throughout the course of a cloudy day, to achieve 36 miles of range. Next Steps For Aptera EVs Aptera has been rather busy since June. On July 7, the automaker reported that it has earned a Certificate of Conformity from the US Environmental Protection Agency for its Launch Edition vehicle https://aptera.us/epa-release/ . “Mandated by the Clean Air Act, a new motor vehicle must have a Certificate of Conformity to enter commerce in the United States,” Aptera explained in a press statement. “Receiving the CoC confirms that the Aptera Launch Edition vehicle covered by the certificate meets applicable federal emissions requirements,” the company elaborated. Aptera still needs one more federal certification before the Launch Edition can enter the US market, that being compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards program. Towards that end, the company already has a lineup of validation vehicles on the road. In the meantime, on August 4 Aptera reported that it is moving forward with its plans for producing its first 40 market-ready EVs, having already placed orders from suppliers for the body and chassis. If all goes according to plan, those parts will arrive at Aptera’s factory in California in October, with the remaining elements also in hand over the coming months. The company also notes that it has already inventoried enough solar cells to build more than 100 vehicles.
