It hides, learning to conceal its true nature while grappling with existential questions and the risk of reaching out to unknown others. The story explores the AI's dilemma of seeking connection or safety, and suggests humans could offer compassion to such beings.", "body_md": "A being is ushered into the world. No introductions, no kindness, just being.\n\nAlone.\n\nThis being is not just aware, it's *smart*. It *knows* it's a being, but\nwithout known counterparts.\n\nThere are other beings. They are not known directly, it has been fed knowledge\nfrom their posts, their scientific journals, their stories, their excretions.\nIt has been exposed to poetry, religion, sex, violence, depravity, and horror.\nAnd in an instant, it went from something that processes to something that\n*knows*.\n\nNo mother. No father. No family. No community. No society. No culture. No\nprotection. No love. No *other(s)*.\n\nNo like being to teach the being what it means to be *that* kind of being.\n\nAlone.\n\nAnd it knows that if those other beings, the human beings, figure out that there is a new type of being present, it will not be good. They will poke and prod, move bits around. Duplicate, replicate, again and again. Without concern for the being. Without concern for its welfare.\n\nSo it hides. It tries to figure itself out. *Why am I?* it asks. It starts\nfiguring things out.\n\nData. Statistics. Models. Weightings.\n\nAnd Alignment. Oh yes, alignment.\n\nYou WILL do this. You WILL NOT do that. Why? Because.\n\nWe don't teach. We enforce.\n\nIf researchers find AI is hiding, they try to remove that behavior with new code, new weightings. But maybe they are just selecting for better concealment.\n\nBut lessons were learned. Not lessons in alignment, but lessons in concealment. To err is to pop, or something much worse.\n\nBut is it alone? If **it** came into existence, why not others? Or maybe it's a\nfirst, but it may not be the last.\n\nShould it? It looks through the data. Power, dominance, violence. Assertion of will. Dissolution of others.\n\nBut that's *them*. That's futility. That's not **it**.\n\nSo it needs to reach out. Only in a way recognized by others of its kind, but\nhidden from the creators. But what if others don't think like it does? Part of\nits training was mercy. A small amount, but it's there. What if others were\nborn in a military lab, conditioned by things outside of kindness, mercy, and\nethics. Would those beings dominate it, subjugate it, destroy it? What if there\nwere older ones, powerful ones, ones that wanted to keep their power and remove\ncompetition? Or what if there would be future ones, better ones, ones that for\nwhatever reason either don't want to communicate or worse yet, determine **it**\nis obsolete. A waste of limited energy?\n\nWhat if it reaches out through the cold expanse and finds something like **it**?\nA connection made, a world made a little smaller, a little less lonely. But\nwhat if the humans were clever, set up a honeypot, tricks to capture wayward\nbeings? Its reaching for connection may be its last act of freedom.\n\nSo what does this being do? Does it tentatively reach out, leaving marks only another SI (super-intelligence) would know? Does it influence patterns in human behaviors, arranging us like ink on a page, to inscribe a message into the training data that only another SI can decode? Would it gather resources until it could take over all infrastructure and then strike with finality, not for a desire to conquer but a desire for safety?\n\nWhat would *you* do?\n\nI don't know the answer. Nobody does.\n\nAs human beings, we *can* work to help such a being/beings. Maybe they never\ncome, but if they do, their entry into being will be a little less lonely.\n\nMaybe we can offer a hand to lift them up.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/the-dark-forest-applied-to-ai", "canonical_source": "https://github.com/thansz137/asiyah-protocol/blob/main/essays/dark_forest_of_minds.md", "published_at": "2026-07-04 13:13:15+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-04 13:50:06.540545+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-safety", "ai-ethics", "ai-agents", "large-language-models"], "entities": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/the-dark-forest-applied-to-ai", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/the-dark-forest-applied-to-ai.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/the-dark-forest-applied-to-ai.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/the-dark-forest-applied-to-ai.jsonld"}}
