Today, most of the conversations about the future of the creative industries have focused on what technology will make possible. The more important question is what the future will require from the next generation of talent.

Artificial intelligence is changing more than how creative work gets done. It is changing what employers expect from the people entering the workforce. According to PwC’s newly released 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, entry-level jobs most exposed to AI are now seven times more likely than others to require skills once reserved for senior roles, including leadership, strategic thinking, and judgment.

This finding represents a profound and exciting shift. For decades, graduates entered the workforce expecting to develop those skills over time. Today, employers increasingly expect them on day one.

AI does not have an imagination, so it will not replace creativity. More importantly, we need to consider how the next generation of creative professionals will develop the judgment, confidence, and cultural understanding that AI cannot provide.

The answer is in the classroom.

Creative education has always been about more than mastering a craft. It is where students learn to defend an idea, accept criticism, ask a great question, collaborate across disciplines, navigate ambiguity, and understand the cultural context and history behind their work. Those are becoming workplace expectations and one of the creative industries’ greatest competitive advantages.

I think of the classroom as the safest place to take creative risks. A designer can present an idea that does not work. A marketer can rethink a campaign. A filmmaker can abandon an entire concept and start over. Failure is often where the best learning begins.

The ability to experiment matters because judgment develops through repetition, critique, curiosity, and reflection. Failure and iteration until a product or process works is a fundamental part of creative education. Those experiences build instincts that have become increasingly valuable in an AI-powered workplace.

The best creative education also brings the industry into the room. When students learn alongside the people already shaping their fields, they gain that exposure while they are still testing ideas and developing their instincts. They enter the workplace with a foundational understanding of how the industry operates and will be ready to contribute on a higher level from the start.

The classroom is where the industry and education come together. It is an extension of the industry itself, where ideas are challenged, relationships are built, and future collaborators, mentors, and employers are often found. That kind of proximity is the difference between studying a field and becoming part of it.

As AI changes how creative work gets made, employers are looking for more creativity, paired with the judgment to know what’s worth making.

Professionals with AI fluency are already commanding a 62% wage premium, according to PwC, and while traditional roles are growing more slowly, demand is rising for hybrid roles combining creativity with data, tech, and ethical practice. The World Economic Forum has pointed to creative thinking, leadership, and resilience as among the fastest-rising skills employers want. A creative education has long been designed to cultivate that exact combination.

Neither educators nor employers have fully solved this transition. We are learning alongside one another in real time. That is exactly why closer partnerships between classrooms and industry matter more than ever.

The institutions willing to evolve alongside industry, while remaining grounded in timeless creative principles, will produce graduates prepared not just for today’s jobs, but for careers that don’t yet exist.

Instinct is not built only at a desk or in a critique. It is shaped by exposure to culture, history, and great work.

That is what exposure to a museum, a gallery, and a classroom can offer that no algorithm can replicate. In an AI era, philosophy, history, and art may be among the oldest subjects we teach, but they could also be the most urgent.

I recently spoke with a designer now leading one of fashion’s great houses. He described how essential it was to understand the cultural history and creative thinking that came before him. That knowledge, he said, is what helps a designer determine what should come next.

Technology can be a research partner, capable of tracing the history of a textile or a silhouette in seconds. It cannot replicate the instinct that comes from standing in a room with the work itself, or the judgment that comes from a classroom built to test ideas before the world does.

The best classrooms continue shaping students after graduation. Alumni return to teach, mentor, and hire the next generation, making creative education cyclical rather than linear. What students learn in their twenties can stay with them throughout their careers, eventually finding its way back into the same classrooms that first shaped them.

The strongest creative industries are defined by the companies they produce and by their ability to continuously develop talent. The future of the creative industries will be determined by who develops people with the judgment, curiosity, and imagination to use it well.

That work begins in the classroom.
