We are currently focused on [harmful propensities in AI systems](https://longtermrisk.org/model-persona-research-agenda/) and [cooperation failures between such systems](https://longtermrisk.org/safe-pareto-improvements-research-agenda/).\n\nTo this end, we do [interdisciplinary research](https://longtermrisk.org/research-overview/), [make and recommend grants](https://longtermrisk.org/grantmaking/), and build a community of researchers and professionals around our priorities.\n\n## Our values\n\nOur primary ethical focus is the [reduction of involuntary suffering](https://longtermrisk.org/the-case-for-suffering-focused-ethics/). This includes human suffering, but also the suffering in non-human animals and potential artificial minds of the future. [In accordance with a diverse range of moral views](https://reducing-suffering.org/the-horror-of-suffering/#The_moral_urgency_of_suffering_is_widely_recognized), we believe that suffering, especially extreme suffering, cannot be easily outweighed by large amounts of happiness.\n\nWhile this leads us to prioritize reducing suffering, we do so within a framework of commonsensical value pluralism and with a strong focus on [cooperation](https://longtermrisk.org/reasons-to-be-nice-to-other-value-systems/). Together with others in the effective altruism community, we want careful ethical reflection to guide the future of our civilization to the greatest extent possible.\n\n## Get involved\n\n**Work with us**. We run a[Summer Research Fellowship](https://longtermrisk.org/summer-research-fellowship/), the[Fundamentals Course](https://longtermrisk.org/fundamentals-program/), and offer[career coaching](https://longtermrisk.org/career-coaching/).
