# Tesla Reportedly Cutting Production In China In January — Not Clear Why

It’s not really clear why. According to [our latest China EV sales report](https://cleantechnica.com/2026/07/20/the-big-ice-meltdown-junes-china-ev-sales-report/), Tesla sales were down 9% in the country in the first half of the year. However, the company has been selling vehicles in other countries in the region — and across the world — that were built in China. Presumably, though, Tesla is expecting a challenging sales environment in the beginning of 2027.

“Tesla plans to run a reduced production schedule at its Shanghai plant in January, extending the reduced output it began this month into next year, according to an internal schedule reviewed by *Reuters*,” [ Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-run-reduced-output-shanghai-january-plan-shows-2026-08-13/) reports. “Tesla will run production for 17 days in January between Jan. 3 to Jan. 19 and will stop electric vehicle output from Jan. 20 to Jan. 31 for an extended break for Chinese New Year, according to the plan seen by

*Reuters*.”

This extended shutdown in January is not what Tesla normally does. However, the Chinese EV market — like its broader auto market — has been down significantly this years, and it’s not clear if that’s also expected in 2027. It seems that Tesla might think so….
