Tesla launches ByteDance’s Doubao large model for in-vehicle systems across China

Tesla began rolling out software update 2026.14.13 on July 31, embedding ByteDance's Doubao large language model into all Tesla vehicles sold in China, including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. This marks the first time Tesla has used a third-party LLM for its in-car AI assistant, which now supports 18 Chinese dialects and handles vehicle controls, navigation, and conversational features. The move addresses regulatory and language limitations of Tesla's global Grok-based assistant in China.

Tesla started rolling out a software update on July 31 that embeds ByteDance’s Doubao large language model into every vehicle it sells in China. The over-the-air update, version 2026.14.13, covers the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, effectively replacing the company’s existing voice assistant with a locally built AI that can handle everything from climate controls to bedtime stories.

It’s the first time Tesla has handed over its in-car AI duties to a third-party LLM in any market.

What Doubao actually does inside a Tesla #

The Doubao integration is more than a voice assistant reskin. The system processes real-time information queries, supports fluid natural language conversations, and handles vehicle functions like adjusting the cabin temperature or setting navigation routes.

Doubao supports up to 18 Chinese dialects and multiple voice tones, which addresses a longstanding pain point for Tesla owners in China. Mandarin-only voice systems tend to frustrate users who speak Cantonese, Shanghainese, Sichuanese, or any of the country’s many regional languages.

Beyond basic vehicle controls, Doubao also functions as a standalone application within the infotainment system. It can chat, tell stories, and even run English language practice sessions.

Why Tesla went local #

Tesla uses its Grok-based assistant in other global markets. In China, though, that approach has limitations. Regulatory requirements around data handling, content moderation, and AI deployment create a compliance landscape that favors domestically developed models. Partnering with ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud unit, a collaboration that dates back to 2025, gave Tesla a shortcut.

The deployment of Doubao also appears to signal a shift away from what some had expected to be a dual-model approach incorporating DeepSeek, the open-source reasoning model that generated significant buzz in early 2025. Instead, Tesla seems to be consolidating around Doubao as its primary China-market AI layer.
