That means there are no wires or antennas needed: Simply plug it in and let it go to work. At $1,399, it’s a bit more affordable than similarly equipped [robot lawn mowers](/smart-lawn-mowers/116048/the-best-robot-lawn-mowers), and costs significantly less than high-end models meant for larger yards like the [Segway Navimow X390](/smart-lawn-mowers/159537/segway-navimow-x390) ($4,999). Most importantly, the V1000 does an excellent job of mowing and edge trimming, is extremely quiet and easy to use, and is loaded with wireless features. All this earns it an Editors’ Choice award for midrange robot lawn mowers. ## Design: Compact Build, All-Weather Durability The V1000 is a three-wheeled mower that stands 23.7 by 13 by 15.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 26 pounds. It comes with a base/charging station with a roof that helps protect the mower from the elements, a power adapter, assorted hardware for securing the base station to the ground, nine spare blades and blade scews, a hex wrench, and a user guide. The mower has a silver finish and an [IPX6](https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/dust-resistant-waterproof-making-sense-of-gadget-ratings) waterproof rating. It uses two large treaded rear wheels and a pair of brushless motors for propulsion and a smaller single wheel up front for precise turning. A third motor powers the cutting disc, which features three blades and offers an 8-inch cutting width with cutting heights ranging from 1 to 3 inches. ## Features: Three Cameras, Zero Perimeter Wires The V1000 offers camera-based mapping, navigation, and obstacle avoidance and does not require any RTK antennas or perimeter wiring. It uses a three-camera system dubbed TerraVision. One camera is used for AI perception and scans your lawn to identify objects and other lawn conditions, while the other two work in tandem as a stereo 3D vision system for real-time mapping. The AI camera can also be used to view live video in the app while the mower is operating. With a sound rating of less than 54dB, it is a bit quieter than the Eufy E18 (56dB). The mower can handle slopes of up to 32.5%, which is about 18 degrees. For even larger spaces, the Segway Navimow X390 can handle an astonishing 2.5 acres in a day and slopes up to 50%. A 4.5-amp-hour/98.55-watt-hour battery pack in the V1000 provides up to 150 minutes of work time per charge and takes 120 minutes to fully recharge. Wireless connectivity features include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and cellular, which means you can control and monitor the mower from just about anywhere. It comes with one year of free cellular service, and once that expires, it’ll cost you $19 per year for a 1GB data plan. The top of the mower is home to a Stop button, a rain sensor, and a control panel, and the front holds two charging pins and a bumper that stops the mower when it comes in contact with an obstacle. The control panel has a round, five-panel battery life indicator; a Power button; a Home button that starts the mower when pressed once and returns it to its base when pressed twice; and plus and minus buttons for raising and lowering the cutting height. All other settings are controlled using the mobile app. ## TerraMow App Controls: Configure Cutting Preferences, Create No-Go Zones The TerraMow mobile app (available for Android and iOS) opens to a screen displaying the mower's image, name, and current battery level. Here, you'll also see an arrow button and a Profile button. The Profile button opens a screen with your account information, tutorial videos, and preferences (units, time format, language). Tap the arrow button to open a screen displaying statistics for the last work cycle, including total area covered, duration, and cutting height. Below that is a map of your lawn and mode selections, including Auto (does the whole lawn), Spot (allows you to send the mower anywhere for spot mowing), Zone (allows you to select a specific zone), MowBox (allows you to draw a cutting zone), and Edge (the mower will only trim the edge of your lawn). At the very bottom of the map screen are buttons to start and pause the mower, end the current session, and return the mower to its station. Along the right side of the map screen are buttons to enable a live camera view, toggle between standard and high-definition map views, open the mower settings screen, and open the map settings screen. Mower settings allow you to select a cutting height and an edge cutting distance, choose a moving speed and a blade rotation speed, and select a mowing direction. Map settings allow you to create no-go zones, create pathways between zones, add and edit zones, configure base station settings, and rotate the map orientation. ## Getting Started: Simple Out-of-Box Assembly and First-Run Setup Setting up the V1000 and creating a map is easy. I started by attaching the roof to the base station and securing the base station to the ground using the included spikes. I powered up the station and let the mower charge for a couple of hours. While it was charging, I downloaded the app, created an account, and tapped Add Device on the opening screen. I selected the V1000, entered my Wi-Fi credentials, and tapped Get Started when the mower was paired with the app. After a lengthy (15-minute) firmware update, it was ready for its first work cycle. I tapped Start Mowing in the app, and the mower left the station and began scanning my lawn. After a few minutes, it started navigating the lawn and creating a map. The TerraVision technology did an excellent job of defining borders around fences, curbs, and my driveway. I had to create a couple of no-go zones to keep it from entering my neighbor’s yard, where there was no fence, and I created two pathways for the mower to cross my walkway and driveway to cut the grass on the other side of my yard. The initial mapping process was easy and took just under two hours to complete. ## Performance: Whisper-Quiet Operation and Flawless Cutting The V1000 did an outstanding job of cutting my lawn. It never strayed from its mapped boundaries and provided a clean cut across the entire lawn. It did a fantastic job of edge trimming without ever falling off the curb, and it had no trouble navigating around obstacles. For example, I accidentally left a garden hose and a watering can on the edge of the lawn, and the V1000 spotted both and changed course to avoid hitting them. The mower did a fine job of navigating the narrow pathways I had created between lawn areas and never ran out of juice while cutting my 2,400-square-foot lawn. It needed 112 minutes to complete the job and followed my schedule without issue. Spot mowing also worked as intended: I placed the mower on my small backyard lawn, tapped Spot mode, and it scanned the area before beginning to mow. As with the front yard, the mower created an accurate map and did a great job of cutting the grass and trimming the edges.
