The biggest obstacle to enterprise AI agents isn’t how smart the model is. It’s how fragile the system around it turns out to be. As of March 2026, only 11% to 14% of enterprise AI agent pilots ever reach production scale. Most hit the same wall: a server crashes mid-task, an API times out, or a human approval takes three days instead of three hours. Without a way to handle those interruptions, the agent fails and the pilot dies.
This is the gap Temporal Technologies is built to fill. Founded in 2019 by Samar Abbas and Maxim Fateev — engineers from the teams behind AWS SQS, AWS SWF, Azure Durable Functions, and Uber’s Cadence — the company offers durable execution. The concept is straightforward: instead of an agent process vanishing when something goes wrong, Temporal checkpoints the state. If a workflow needs to wait for a human sign-off or retry a failed connection, it picks up exactly where it stopped. Short-lived scripts become long-running processes that survive days or weeks.
Who Actually Depends on It #
The platform’s traction is best measured by who can’t afford to have it go down. OpenAI is Temporal’s largest customer, using the architecture to power Codex and image generation. That’s not a casual integration — it’s a core dependency for the company defining the current AI frontier.
The broader customer roster reads like a stress test of enterprise complexity. Netflix runs over 100,000 workflows per day on the platform. Datadog manages millions monthly. Emergent processes more than 1 billion agent actions per month through Temporal Cloud. Salesforce has reported 36% quarter-over-quarter growth since adopting it. Replit uses it to keep Replit Agent running at scale. Retool built its Workflow and Agents products on top of it.
The Numbers #
Temporal reports 380% year-over-year revenue growth, 350% growth in weekly active usage, and 500% install growth. An open-source MIT license has lowered adoption friction — developers can start small and scale as their agentic requirements intensify. The company raised $300 million in a Series D on February 17, 2026, at a $5 billion pre-money valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sapphire Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Index, Tiger Global, GIC, Madrona, and Amplify Partners. Total funding to date: approximately $650 million across six rounds.
Not the Only Game #
Temporal isn’t alone in targeting this problem. LangGraph has emerged as a de facto standard for multi-agent systems. AWS offers its own Multi-Agent Orchestrator. CrewAI, Inngest, and Restate each take different approaches to the same fundamental challenge: making multi-step agent workflows reliable enough for production.
Bloomberg reported on August 19 that Temporal is in talks to raise approximately $500 million at a valuation exceeding $12 billion. The round is not closed. Terms could change. The lead investor remains undisclosed. But the direction of capital tells a story: enterprises have moved past the experimental phase with AI agents. The constraint holding them back isn’t model capability — it’s whether the infrastructure can keep an agent alive long enough to finish what it started.
