The P80 Pro starts at 428 euros (about $498) and the P80 Ultra at 549 euros (about $638), with availability in Europe starting today.", "body_md": "Smartphones are not known for having matte, paper-like screens. TCL wants to change that with its newly announced [P80 Pro and P80 Ultra phones](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/tcl-advances-its-smartphone-ambition-with-the-p80-series-at-ifa-2026-302868624.html).\n\nAnnounced at [IFA 2026](https://gizmodo.com/live-updates-from-ifa-2026-in-berlin-2000800025), the two TCL phones use the company’s “NXTPAPER AMOLED” display, which finally brings the deep contrast that AMOLED screens are known for to the company’s anti-reflection display technology. If you’ve heard of TCL’s NXTPAPER phones and tablets before, you’ll know they’re engineered to help reduce glare and blue light, which supposedly also decreases eye strain when you’re inevitably doomscrolling in bed.\n\nI am not in Berlin to see the P80 Pro and P80 Ultra, so I can’t say how much deeper the blacks are compared to non-AMOLED versions of TCL’s NXTPAPER screens. Hopefully, our two reporters on the ground can sneak a peek, though.\n\nOtherwise, the two phones are pretty standard Android affairs. The P80 Pro has a 6.83-inch screen with a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate that can reach a max of 3,200 nits of peak brightness. It comes with a 5,800mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. In terms of performance, you’re looking at a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite chip with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. For rear cameras, the P80 Pro has a 50-megapixel main camera and 8-megapixel ultrawide.\n\nThe P80 Ultra, as you’d expect from an “Ultra” phone, has the better cameras. It has the same size screen, resolution, refresh rate, and peak brightness as the P80 Pro. It also has the same battery and chipset, but storage tops out at 512GB. You’ll get triple rear cameras instead of dual shooters: a 50-megapixel main, a 50-megapixel 3x telephoto, and an 8-megapixel ultrawide.\n\nOne cool feature on both the P80 Pro and P80 Ultra is a slider on the side called the “NXTPAPER KEY.” [According to GSMArena](https://www.gsmarena.com/the_tcl_p80_ultra_debuts_the_first_oledbased_nxtpaper_display_the_p80_pro_has_it_too-news-74458.php), switch it on and it’ll launch into an e-reader mode, silence notifications, and put snooze background apps. The phone blog says the e-reader mode extends the phones’ battery life for up to a week of reading. (I’m not sure who would do that continuously, but to each their own.) The P80 Pro and P80 Ultra also reportedly come with more than 500 e-books preloaded.\n\nAnother neat feature that I’ve not seen on any other phones: AI that can convert an ebook into an audiobook or a podcast. How well that works or sounds is, again, something I can’t tell you. But it’s intriguing, I’ll tell you that.\n\nTCL’s P80 Pro and P80 Ultra are available starting today. The only catch is that they’re Europe-only. The P80 Pro starts at 428 euros (about $498) and the P80 Ultra starts at 549 euros (about $638).\n\n*Gizmodo is on the ground in Berlin all week bringing you everything you need to know about the tech unveiled at IFA 2026.
