The AI machine continues to cause problems for some developers - with System76 now banning LLM-generated content in code Pull Requests for COSMIC.

In a post on Reddit, System76 Principal Engineer Jeremy Soller said:

"There are various reasons, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. The primary reason is simply our team's load for reviews. In particular, we would like to prioritize working on contributions from our own team and regular contributors, while we have been receiving far more changes from first-time contributors using LLMs. These changes are often unplanned and have had a low acceptance rate.

The policy can be seen as part of the revised PR template here: [https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-epoch/blob/master/.github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md](https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-epoch/blob/master/.github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md).

There is an exception for cosmic-flatpak, where each project manages its own flatpak manifest, pointing to its own code. These manifests are reviewed by our team for the correct sandboxing prior to accepting changes."

Their [contributing guidelines](https://github.com/pop-os/pop/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md) have been updated to mention "Content generated by any LLM (also known as AI) may not be contributed in issues or PRs to Pop!_OS projects including code, comments, and descriptions".

We've seen this across many open source projects, like the popular cross-platform [Godot Engine that also had issues with AI requests flooding in](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/07/godot-engine-to-get-stricter-on-ai-contributed-code/).

Recently we also saw the KDE team [attempt to make some LLM guidelines as well](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/09/kde-developers-attempts-at-creating-llm-guidelines-are-not-going-well/).

This will no doubt continue to spread due to how easy it is to access AI tools. At least until the bubble finally pops - if it ever does. Not all AI reports are useless though, as we've seen for the Linux kernel security issues, which has [prompted Canonical to speed up Ubuntu Linux kernel updates](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/09/ubuntu-to-get-quicker-linux-kernel-security-updates-due-to-so-many-ai-reports/).
