Sustainability for the AI era Microsoft hosted its second annual Global Sustainability Supplier Summit in Seoul, convening over 100 attendees from dozens of suppliers and organizations to accelerate sustainable supply chain action for the AI era. Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft's Chief Sustainability Officer, stated that sustainability ambitions remain unchanged but the operating system has changed, with AI increasing demand for energy, infrastructure, and materials. The summit focused on the need for affordable carbon-free electricity and collective action on Scope 3 emissions, which account for approximately 70% of Microsoft's emissions. As we continue to expand the physical infrastructure that powers AI and cloud services, we also carry a responsibility to ensure that technology strengthens, rather than strains, the communities and systems on which it depends. This includes our supply chain as a significant lever in addressing our environmental impact. Recognizing the critical role our supply chain plays in Microsoft’s sustainability progress, Microsoft hosted its second annual Global Sustainability Supplier Summit in Seoul, convening more than a hundred attendees representing dozens of suppliers and organizations spanning industry, finance, consulting, startups, advocacy groups, and non-profits. Our 2025 Supplier Sustainability Summit in Singapore was about building alignment around the key challenges and opportunities. The 2026 Summit in Seoul was about accelerating action, and about the role policy plays in turning that ambition into deployment. The Summit explored how the rapid growth of AI is reshaping demand for energy, materials, manufacturing, and infrastructure, and what this means for building more sustainable, resilient, and competitive supply chains. Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft’s Chief Sustainability Officer, opened the summit with a clear framing: our sustainability ambitions remain unchanged, but the system in which we operate has changed. As AI becomes foundational to economies and industries around the world, it is increasing demand for energy, infrastructure, materials, and manufacturing required to support that growth. This means sustainability increasingly depends not only on reducing emissions, but also on strengthening the systems that underpin AI deployment. That theme carried through the Summit discussions. Participants agreed that access to affordable, reliable carbon-free electricity is becoming a critical enabler of AI and cloud growth. This is because carbon-free electricity helps organizations power growth while advancing their decarbonization ambitions. Enabling that growth will require sustained investment in clean energy, grid infrastructure, and resilient supply chains, particularly in manufacturing hubs where expanding carbon-free capacity is essential to both business growth and decarbonization. Scope 3: The great equalizer – a common challenge for a collective breakthrough The path to a more sustainable future extends far beyond any one company’s operations. According to Microsoft’s 2026 Environmental Sustainability Report https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/sustainability/report/ , approximately 70% of Microsoft’s emissions reside in purchased goods, services, and capital goods. Microsoft has matched 100% of its annual electricity consumption with renewable energy and signed agreements for up to 40 gigawatts of renewable energy globally. It has also achieved a 92% reuse and recycling rate through its Circular Centers program while continuing to advance lifecycle assessment capabilities that improve visibility across its value chain. These are meaningful results within Microsoft’s own operations. But the larger decarbonization challenge sits in the supply chain, and no company can solve that alone. That is why Scope 3 has become the industry’s great equalizer. Meaningful progress will require customers, suppliers, and industry partners to work together to accelerate decarbonization across the global economy. From policy to power Seoul was a fitting backdrop for that conversation. Earlier this year, South Korea introduced legislation to address local separation-distance restrictions that had constrained solar development across much of the country. The reform could unlock viable sites across hundreds of municipalities nationwide, and its significance extends beyond a single policy change. It reflects a broader shift from policy to power: turning regulatory reform into carbon-free electricity projects that can support the next generation of AI infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. Across the global cloud hyperscale ecosystem, the question is no longer whether clean energy can scale; it is how quickly industry, government, and developers can work together to turn demand into deployment. That is why collective efforts such as SEMI’s Global Energy and Sustainability Executive Council GESEC , where Microsoft leads the carbon-free electricity pillar, matter more each year. They create space to share expertise, align on common challenges, and accelerate progress across the industry. Four lessons for the road ahead Several themes emerged throughout the Summit. Together, they define what it will take to scale sustainability in the AI era. 1. Collaboration is a competitive advantage. No company can reduce value chain emissions alone. Progress will depend on deeper alignment across suppliers, customers, policymakers, and industry partners. The faster we share knowledge, align demand signals, and work toward common goals, the faster we can accelerate innovation and system-wide change. 2. Carbon-free electricity enables growth . Access to affordable, reliable electricity is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for expansion, and solar energy is typically the fastest to deploy. As energy demand grows, scaling clean energy will require region-specific solutions, stronger partnerships, and investment in both generation and grid infrastructure. Expanding transmission networks and modernizing power systems will be essential to supporting both growth and decarbonization. 3. Innovation accelerates impact . Innovation is reshaping what is possible. New approaches in financing, materials, lifecycle assessment, and AI are helping organizations better measure impacts, optimize resources, and accelerate progress. As these solutions mature, they have the potential to unlock greater transparency, efficiency, and scale across the value chain. 4. The strongest sustainability strategies create business value . Sustainability scales fastest when it aligns with business priorities. The most successful initiatives strengthen resilience, improve supply security, and create long-term value while reducing environmental impact. The next chapter will be about driving actions through shared roadmaps, targeted pilots, and deeper collaboration across the supplier ecosystem. A connected global supplier community can play an important role in that journey by helping align data, measurement approaches, and best practices while addressing challenges that no company can solve alone. The organizations and regions that move fastest to deploy clean energy, modernize infrastructure, and scale industrial decarbonization will be best positioned to lead.
