SubmitHub bans AI-generated music from its promotion services

SubmitHub is blocking music it flags as at least 85% likely to be AI-generated, founder Jason Grishkoff announced, after the platform's own research found 23.2% of submitted tracks were fully AI-generated. SubmitHub uses its own AI detector, which Grishkoff said is 99.4% accurate according to a third party, and the policy cuts off roughly 10% of the company's revenue. Grishkoff said the team decided it wants to build a platform that helps people promote real music.

Earlier this year, music-promo platform SubmitHub revealed research suggesting that 23.2% of the tracks being submitted were fully AI-generated.

Now it’s made some changes in response. “Our new policy: we’re blocking pure AI submissions,” explained founder Jason Grishkoff in an update on the site.

SubmitHub is using its own AI-detection technology to decide which tracks will be blocked. Anything flagged as being at least 85% likely to be AI will not be allowed.

“Will we sometimes get this wrong? It’s possible. Our AI detector is good – it’s 99.4% accurate, according to a 3rd party,” noted Grishkoff.

“Even if it’s wrong once in a blue moon, the fact that we’re picking it up at 85%+ likely AI means there’s a pretty good chance Spotify is also identifying it as AI. Which means your chances of triggering their algorithm probably aren’t great, and it’d be wrong of us to sell you a promotion package.”

“We’re actually ‘cutting off’ 10% of our revenue stream here, so this decision goes counter to traditional business logic,” he added later.

“At the end of the day, we as a team have decided that we want to build a platform that actually helps people promote real music. And if the algorithm means AI creators can’t achieve that, we’re wrong to sell a service that claims to provide it.”
