Stripe has entered advanced negotiations to acquire OpenRouter for approximately $10 billion, according to Bloomberg, marking one of the largest deals in the AI infrastructure space. Reports on the potential acquisition surfaced on July 23, 2026, and discussions are now said to be exclusive. No agreement has yet been finalized.
OpenRouter, founded in New York in 2023, gives developers a single API to access over 500 large language models from more than 60 providers. Instead of wiring up separate connections to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others, a developer hits one endpoint and routes traffic wherever they want. The platform processes trillions of tokens monthly and serves millions of developers.
From $1.3B to $10B in months #
The company raised a funding round in May 2026 that valued it at $1.3 billion. The current negotiations value it at approximately $10 billion, a jump of over seven times in roughly three months.
Stripe’s interest here is not purely financial. The company already processes payments for OpenRouter, with cross-integration allowing OpenRouter to utilize payment methods including credit cards, Alipay, and Google Pay. Buying a company you already bill gives Stripe a clearer picture of OpenRouter’s actual revenue trajectory than most outside observers would have.
Why Stripe wants to own AI infrastructure #
Stripe previously acquired Metronome, a platform focused on usage-based billing for software services, which fits alongside what OpenRouter does. Usage-based billing and AI model routing are two sides of the same coin: AI applications increasingly charge users by the token or by the API call, and whoever owns the billing and routing layer sits in a structurally powerful position.
The rise of autonomous AI agents means that API call volumes are growing faster than the number of people actively using any given application. An agent handling customer service inquiries might make hundreds of model calls for a single conversation. OpenRouter sits at the intersection of all of those calls.
What this means for the competitive landscape #
The ongoing negotiations remain dynamic, with possibilities for competing bids or even the collapse of the proposed deal. For developers, the immediate question is what changes about OpenRouter’s product roadmap under new ownership. OpenRouter’s appeal has been its breadth and neutrality as a marketplace aggregating supply from dozens of model providers.
