Starbucks builds AI tools to replace Microsoft and IBM software, signaling enterprise shift away from big tech vendors

Starbucks is developing in-house AI-powered software to replace Microsoft Dynamics 365 and IBM TRIRIGA, aiming to reduce reliance on big tech vendors. The internally built replacements could go live by the end of 2027, causing IBM and Microsoft shares to dip. The move signals a broader enterprise shift toward custom AI tools.

The coffee giant is developing in-house alternatives to Microsoft Dynamics 365 and IBM TRIRIGA, a move that could reshape how major corporations approach enterprise software.

Starbucks is brewing something besides lattes. The coffee chain is building its own AI-powered software tools designed to replace systems it currently licenses from Microsoft and IBM, according to an internal presentation reviewed by Bloomberg News.

The company is targeting Microsoft Dynamics 365, which it uses for inventory tracking, and IBM’s TRIRIGA platform, which handles maintenance management. Some of the internally developed replacements could go live by the end of 2027, assuming testing goes well.

IBM shares declined in early trading following the report on July 9, 2026. Microsoft also saw a slight dip. Starbucks’ own stock remained relatively stable.

The initiative reportedly leverages AI-assisted coding, which dramatically lowers the barrier to building custom software.

IBM faces a more straightforward threat. TRIRIGA is part of IBM’s Maximo suite, which is a core revenue driver in its infrastructure management business.

This isn’t Starbucks’ first foray into emerging technology. The company launched its Odyssey loyalty program in 2022, built on the Polygon blockchain, which used NFTs as digital loyalty stamps. That experiment was discontinued in March 2024.

The new AI initiative is internal, operationally focused, and entirely centralized, with no crypto tokens or blockchain protocols associated with Starbucks’ current AI software development.
