# Spotify will label AI artist identities and exclude them from recommendations

- Spotify will begin applying “AI Persona” and “Likely AI Persona” labels in mid-September 2026.
[[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations) - The company will combine artist disclosures with human review and AI tools, initially prioritizing profiles above defined audience thresholds.
[[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations) - Music from labeled profiles will be excluded from personalized and editorial recommendations by default.

Spotify will begin labeling artist profiles built around synthetic identities and will keep music from those profiles out of personalized recommendations by default. The rollout is scheduled to begin in mid-September 2026. [[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations)

Profiles that do not represent a real person will receive an “AI Persona” badge. Spotify will also apply a “Likely AI Persona” label when its review indicates that an artist’s name, image or public identity appears to be generated by artificial intelligence. ## Disclosure will not be the only trigger

Artists can identify themselves as AI personas through Spotify for Artists, but the company said it will not rely solely on voluntary disclosure. Spotify plans to use human review and AI tools to examine profiles that appear to present photorealistic, AI-generated identities. [[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations)

The initial review will focus on profiles that meet “defined audience thresholds,” allowing Spotify to prioritize artists with the largest listener reach. Spotify has not disclosed those thresholds or described how often a profile will be reassessed. [[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations)

Spotify plans to notify artists when it applies a “Likely AI Persona” label and give them a way to appeal. It also plans to add a feature allowing listeners to flag profiles they believe represent AI-generated identities. ## The immediate penalty is lost algorithmic exposure

Music from AI Persona profiles will be excluded by default from Spotify’s editorial suggestions and personalized recommendation surfaces. The policy therefore changes how those profiles are discovered through Spotify’s systems rather than announcing a blanket removal of their music from the service. [[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations)

Spotify said it tunes its recommendation systems to highlight authentic human artists and limit spam, “slop” and low-effort content. Its earlier AI policy separately described a spam filter intended to identify mass uploads, duplicates, search-engine tactics and other attempts to manipulate discovery. Spotify has not specified whether an AI Persona label will affect search results, user-created playlists, royalty eligibility or other catalog access. The company also has not published an estimate of how many profiles it expects to label.

## Human artists using AI are treated differently

Spotify is drawing a distinction between an AI-generated artist identity and a human artist who uses AI during production. Its “Verified by Spotify” standards say artists who use AI tools responsibly can qualify for verification if they present themselves authentically. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification at launch. [[2]](https://support.spotify.com/ws/article/verified-by-spotify/)

Spotify also offers optional AI credits for specific contributions to a track, such as lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances or production. The credits are currently in beta, appear to listeners on mobile in Song Credits and the Now Playing view, and are submitted through participating distributors. They are not artist-profile badges or track-level labels. [[3]](https://support.spotify.com/cw-en/artists/article/ai-credits/)

That system is intended to describe how AI was used rather than classify an entire song as simply “AI” or “not AI.” Spotify says the absence of an AI credit does not establish that no AI was used, because the system depends on artist, rights-holder and distributor disclosure. ## The policy does not detect every AI-generated song

The AI Persona rollout is focused on identity. It does not amount to a catalog-wide system for determining whether a song’s vocals, lyrics or instrumentation were generated by AI. That leaves several categories outside the new profile label, including music made by a human artist with AI assistance and synthetic music released under a profile that does not trigger Spotify’s identity review. [[1]](https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/977815/spotify-ai-persona-label-recommendations)[[3]](https://support.spotify.com/cw-en/artists/article/ai-credits/)

Spotify has separate rules against unauthorized vocal impersonation and has said it is investing in spam filtering and protections against profile mismatches, in which music is fraudulently delivered to another artist’s page. Those are related enforcement tools, but they do not create a complete public record of AI involvement across Spotify’s catalog. Spotify said in September 2025 that it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks during the previous 12 months. The AI Persona rollout extends that broader anti-spam and authenticity effort to the artist profile, beginning with synthetic identities that Spotify believes have the greatest audience reach.
