# Spectra Logic reclaiming under-used storage

Storage Reclaim is a [Spectra Logic](https://www.blocksandfiles.com/data-management/2026/09/09/spectra-logic-adds-ai-powered-video-content-discovery/5295244) offering that identifies the least-used files and objects in a customer’s SSD and disk drive data estate and can move them to lower-costs storage to free up space.

Several other storage suppliers have responded to the increased cost of flash by offering ways to get dated files and objects off it or re-using old SSDs. Eg;  DDN, Hammerspace, [Komprise](https://www.blocksandfiles.com/data-management/2026/03/26/komprises-flash-stretch-tiers-nas-to-cloud-for-flash-capacity-savings/5211648 ), [Scality](https://www.blocksandfiles.com/object/2026/05/12/scalitys-autonomous-data-infrastructure-does-agent-driven-tiering-and-more/5238809),  [StorONE](https://www.blocksandfiles.com/flash/2026/07/08/storone-can-tier-disk-data-to-existing-all-flash-arrays/5268252), WEKA, Vast Data, and [VDURA](< https://www.blocksandfiles.com/flash/2026/04/24/vdura-ceo-sees-the-end-of-the-all-flash-array-era/5218827>). Now Spectra is joining this party with effectively an updated StorCycle-based offering.

CEO Nathan Thompson said: “Organizations have traditionally responded to growing storage requirements by buying more capacity. But the cheapest flash you’ll ever buy is the flash you already own. Storage Reclaim shows organizations what  is consuming their existing storage capacity and moves data that no longer requires premium performance. With an ecosystem that includes Komprise, [Starfish Storage](https://www.blocksandfiles.com/data-management/2025/05/29/data-catalogs-for-unstructured-data-offer-a-new-twist-on-an-old-theme/1604219), and rclone, customers can reclaim that capacity using the approach that best fits their environment.”

Storage Reclaim identifies inactive unstructured data on existing storage systems and moves it to an economical protected tier, allowing organizations to reclaim capacity for their most active workloads. It works in four steps:

- Analyze: A read-only analysis measures how much data is inactive or infrequently accessed based on age and access patterns.
- Identify: Policies determine which data qualifies to move from flash and disk storage to an economical, protected tier.
- Move and Manage: Qualified inactive data is moved according to policy using StorCycle or an integrated data-management technology, while maintaining the visibility, access and recall required by the customer environment.
- Reclaim: Flash and disk storage capacity is returned to active workloads, AI and future growth, extending the life of the storage already in place.

[StorCycle](https://blocksandfiles.com/2021/06/22/spectralogic-improves-storcycle-with-high-availability-more-tiers-and-better-job-control/) is SpectraLogic file/object lifecycle management software that scans primary on-premises or public cloud storage and moves older, less-accessed data from primary storage tiers to less expensive ones, such as nearline disk (NAS or object), tape, or archive storage tiers in the public cloud – both AWS and Azure.

Qualified data movers, apart from StorCycle in the Storage Reclaim ecosystem, include Komprise, Starfish Storage and rclone. Spectra BlackPearl Object Gateway and Spectra tape storage provide the foundation, Sopectra says, for economical, protected long-term retention.

[BlackPearl](https://www.theregister.com/2013/10/07/spectralogic_invents_tapebased_object_store/) is a hybrid flash/disk, front-end cache that stores files as objects on back-end tape devices. Spectra’s tape library products include the [TFinity](https://blocksandfiles.com/2020/09/28/spectra-logic-exabyte-tape-library/) line which can hold an exabyte or more of data.

We asked Spectra’s VP of Marketing, George Wagner a couple of questions about Storage Reclaim.

B&F: What existing storage systems are supported? Object? File? SMB? NFS? On-premises? Public cloud?

George Wagner: "Spectra Storage Reclaim supports a range of existing file and object storage environments, including NAS systems using SMB/CIFS and NFS protocols, as well as S3-compatible object storage. It supports both on-premises and supported public-cloud storage sources. Specific compatibility depends on the selected data mover, which may include Spectra StorCycle, Komprise, Starfish Storage, or rclone.”

B&F: How does Storage Reclaim scan existing storage systems?

George Wagner: "Spectra Storage Analysis is a one-time assessment performed using Spectra StorCycle software. It connects to existing storage systems and scans file metadata, including file age and size, to identify inactive data and estimate how much storage capacity could be reclaimed. Third-party tools provide similar analysis capabilities using their own methods. The results help customers determine which data is appropriate for migration to lower-cost storage.”
