*SpAItial's new iPhone app does not dream up a 3D world from a text prompt. It rebuilds the one already in front of your camera, at real-world scale, in about ten minutes.*

On October 27, SpAItial AI released Echo-3 and a companion iPhone app that turns a short phone video into a photorealistic, metric-scale 3D reconstruction of a real room, building, or outdoor space. Matthias Niessner, the company's CEO and a co-founder of the AI video company Synthesia, announced the launch on X, describing Echo-3 as a world model that treats reconstruction as "conditional generation" rather than freeform invention.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Most of the world-model conversation this year has centered on generative systems like Google DeepMind's Genie 3, which conjures an explorable environment out of a text prompt or a single image with no obligation to match anything that exists. Echo-3 does the opposite. Point an iPhone at your living room, walk through it for five to ten minutes, and the app hands back a 3D Gaussian splat, point cloud, or mesh that preserves actual dimensions, not an AI's impression of what a living room might look like.

According to coverage from Radiance Fields and Runtime Wire, Echo-3 can handle scales from a single room up to multi-floor buildings, outdoor spaces, and public venues. Niessner's own post put it plainly: the outputs are "photorealistic 3DGS, point clouds, and meshes at metric scale, only from a short iPhone video." No LiDAR rig, no survey-grade scanner, no professional photogrammetry crew.

The app requires iOS 18 or later and runs on any modern iPhone, though Pro models with LiDAR get live coverage guidance and a denser scan preview while capturing. It's free to download, but processing a scan draws down credits, with SpAItial giving new users a free first month under its subscription plans. Android support is coming, the company says, but is not yet live.

That iPhone-first rollout is itself a small data point in a bigger story: the tools for generating usable 3D space are moving out of research labs and onto consumer hardware faster than most people clocked. A year ago, a navigable 3D reconstruction at this fidelity meant a drone survey or a matterport rig. Now it's a feature in an app store, gated by a subscription tier instead of a hardware budget.

SpAItial has been building toward this for a while. The company, founded by Niessner, a former Technical University of Munich professor, raised a $13 million seed round in May 2025 to build what it calls Spatial Foundation Models, systems meant to natively understand geometry, physics, and material properties rather than just pixels. Its first public release, Echo, generated explorable 3D scenes from text or images. Echo-2 followed in spring 2026, refining real-time scene generation using Gaussian splatting for browser-based rendering. Echo-3 is the pivot from inventing spaces to capturing them.

## Why reconstruction, not generation, is the harder sell

Niessner frames the bigger opportunity around physical AI, the robotics, construction, and real estate systems that need enormous volumes of accurate real-world 3D data to train on, and argues that data pipeline has been bottlenecked by the cost of professional scanning. If Echo-3 works as advertised, anyone with an iPhone becomes a potential contributor of metric-scale environment data, which is a very different business model than selling a creative tool to game designers or VFX artists.

It also puts SpAItial in a different lane from where the loudest AI headlines have been pointed this year. Genie 3's real-time generation and World Labs' Marble have drawn attention because they let anyone type a sentence and walk into a world that never existed. Echo-3 is making a quieter bet: that the more valuable business, at least for now, is faithfully digitizing the world that already exists, one iPhone scan at a time. Echo-3 is also available through an API that accepts photos or video and returns a 3D world, so the reconstruction pipeline isn't limited to the consumer app.

Whether that bet pays off depends on something SpAItial can't fully control: how many people are actually willing to walk around their house with a phone for ten minutes to get a digital twin of it. The generative crowd doesn't have that problem. Their users just type.
