According to The Information, the company has been preparing a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, about 30 miles from Austin, to make blades and vanes for large industrial gas turbines. That sounds like a niche factory. It isn't. Those parts are now one of the places where the AI boom runs into the physical world.

## The Bottleneck Is Not Abstract

The clearest evidence is in SpaceX's own hiring. A current SpaceX job listing for a senior materials engineer in Bastrop is titled "Blades and Vanes Foundry" and says the role will work on nickel superalloy castings for power generation. The Information also reported listings for automation, tooling and operations roles tied to the same new line. One operations listing described ownership of the construction, buildout and ramp-up of the plant.

That's not a vague future bet. That's a company staffing a foundry.

Big gas turbines depend on hot-section blades and vanes that can keep working in extreme heat. These are not simple metal parts you can order from any machine shop. In a February conversation with Dwarkesh Patel and John Collison, Elon Musk said turbine blades and vanes were the limiting factor and that only three casting companies could make them. The Information described the market as a four-company oligopoly and said large turbine makers such as GE Vernova are sold out until 2030.

You don't need to care about turbine metallurgy to see the business problem. If your data center plan depends on getting more power online next year, a supplier queue running into 2030 is not a queue. It's a wall.

## Why Musk Wants To Own The Foundry

You can see why this would drive Musk toward vertical integration. Waiting for the normal supply chain doesn't fit a company trying to build gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure on SpaceX timelines. Musk said in that February discussion that SpaceX and Tesla would probably have to make turbine blades and vanes internally to bring enough power online. He also said those parts could arrive 12 to 18 months before the full turbines. That's the prize here: not elegance, not branding, just time.

The demand is already visible in Memphis. TechCrunch reported in July that SpaceX was operating 69 unpermitted gas turbines to power Colossus data centers near Memphis, after SpaceX acquired xAI in February. The company said those temporary turbines will not be fully removed until July 2027 while it moves toward a permanent 1.2 gigawatt natural gas plant. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have sued over the turbines. That detail matters because it shows the trade-off plainly: fast AI power has already become a regulatory and community fight.

The money points in the same direction. SpaceX disclosed in SEC filings that it planned to spend more than $2.8 billion on gas turbines for data centers over three years, a figure Wired also highlighted in May. That is real money, even for SpaceX. It also tells you the company is not treating power as a side issue. Power is becoming part of the product.

Texas adds another piece. Electrek reported this month that Tesla and SpaceX's Terafab chip project in Grimes County, Texas, is planned around newly built natural gas plants and large battery arrays rather than Tesla solar. The first phase was put at about $16.8 billion, with the companies saying the site is meant to produce more than a terawatt of compute per year. If that plan holds, it will need turbines too.

There is also a rocket reason to make the numbers work. The Information reported that Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas sees the Bastrop foundry serving both SpaceX's data center power needs and Raptor turbopump castings for Starship. That is the kind of overlap Musk companies look for: one expensive manufacturing base, two internal buyers, less waiting on suppliers who have better customers to serve or no capacity left at all.

Frankly, this is the part of the AI buildout that gets too little attention. Everyone can understand a shortage of Nvidia chips. Fewer people think about the cast metal buried inside the turbines that keep those chips running. But the constraint is just as real. A GPU order is only useful if the electricity arrives with it.

The hard question is whether SpaceX can actually qualify and ship these parts on the schedule Musk wants. Precision casting for turbine blades is difficult for a reason, and The Information noted that replicating what established suppliers have spent decades building could take years.
