# Space streams cloud files directly into Premiere, Photoshop and other Mac apps

[Jason Zhao (@byjasonz)](https://x.com/byjasonz) launched [Space](https://spacefs.com) on August 10th, pitching a cloud filesystem that appears as a normal Mac drive and streams only the portions of a file requested by local applications.

Zhao described Space [in a thread on X](https://x.com/byjasonz/status/2086857670318068162) as an attempt to deliver "what Dropbox was supposed to be": cloud capacity that behaves like storage attached directly to a computer. Space says its virtual drive works with existing applications, shared team workflows and AI agents without requiring users to move files through a separate web interface. The launch gives a new name and a broader collaboration pitch to technology Zhao, Arihant Bapna and Matthew Ao demonstrated earlier this summer as Skyglass. [Matthew Ao](https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matthew-r-ao) said the original prototype grew out of the trio's own media workflow, which generated over a terabyte of raw footage in some weeks for the Matt & Ari YouTube channel. That origin still shapes the strongest use case. Space lists DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Blender among the applications that can treat its virtual filesystem as a conventional drive. ### Streaming files instead of synchronizing copies

Conventional cloud drives commonly maintain local copies of files or download a complete file before an application can work with it. Space says it fetches requested byte ranges in real time and caches only the data a user touches. A video editor scrubbing through a large clip, for example, should receive the relevant sections without first pulling the entire source file onto the Mac. ([spacefs.com](https://spacefs.com/))

Space also says saved changes propagate to connected devices within seconds. Files being written by a teammate or agent can become readable from another connected machine before the upload has completed, according to Space's product page. Those claims have not been independently benchmarked, though Space has published a [filesystem benchmark repository on GitHub](https://github.com/Space-Computer-Inc) containing scripts for comparing NFS and virtual filesystem implementations. The product is currently focused on macOS. Signing in adds a drive named Space to Finder, and a global search tool called Spacebar can be opened with Option-Space. ### A shared filesystem for people and agents

Zhao is also positioning the filesystem as infrastructure for AI-native organizations. Agents can read from and write to the same mounted drive used by employees and existing desktop applications, removing the need to construct a separate file-transfer layer for each automated workflow. That pitch raises the stakes around permissions, indexing and data handling. Space's [privacy notice](https://spacefs.com/privacy/) says stored files may be indexed for search and processed by infrastructure and AI service providers as needed to supply requested features. It also says public links can expose associated content without requiring an account, while workspace members may see files, activity and membership information according to their roles. Space is a four-person, Toronto-linked business founded in 2026, according to its LinkedIn page. Zhao studied at Queen's University, while Bapna studied at the University of Toronto. The three builders already had experience producing software and media together before turning their own storage bottleneck into Space. Space has not published pricing on its main website. The immediate test is performance under the conditions its target customers care about: large source files, several collaborators, unstable connections and applications that expect local-disk latency. If its byte-range streaming holds up in production, Space can sell cloud storage as an active workspace instead of a remote archive.
