Solana's growing dominance in the micropayment protocol signals a broader shift in how blockchains compete for AI-driven payment infrastructure
For the past six months, Base has been the undisputed king of x402 micropayments. That streak is over. Solana has overtaken Base in daily x402 transaction count, reclaiming the top spot in one of crypto’s fastest-growing payment niches.
What x402 is and why it matters #
That HTTP status code has been sitting mostly unused since the early days of the internet, reserved for some vague future where the web would have native payments built in. The x402 protocol finally puts it to work.
Developed under the x402 Foundation, the protocol turns that dusty status code into an open standard for on-chain micropayments. No subscriptions, no API keys, no traditional payment rails. Just a stablecoin transaction, predominantly in USDC, triggered automatically when a service requests payment.
The numbers behind the flip #
Solana recorded 518,400 x402 payments in a single day on January 20, 2026, edging past Base’s 505,000. The margin was slim, roughly 2.6%, but the symbolic weight is significant given Base’s half-year lead.
Transaction volume told a similar story. Solana processed approximately $34,600 worth of x402 payments that day, compared to Base’s $34,300.
By mid-August 2026, Solana had dramatically extended its lead. The network captured roughly 70% of monthly x402 volume across all chains and had processed over 35 million x402 transactions since the protocol’s inception.
Solana’s overall daily transaction count regularly exceeds 100 million, with peaks above 170 million in August 2026. Base typically handles several million.
Why Solana pulled ahead #
On August 21, 2026, Ramp announced the addition of x402 AI agent wallet capabilities on Solana, targeting its network of over 70,000 businesses. Ramp isn’t a crypto-native startup pitching to DeFi degens. It’s a fintech company whose clients need automated payment infrastructure that works reliably at scale.
Nearly all x402 payments settle in USDC, making the protocol a meaningful driver of stablecoin velocity on whichever chain dominates.
