Snap's consumer AR glasses are finally real, and they come with a price tag that screams 'early adopter tax'

Snap is taking pre-orders for its consumer augmented reality glasses, called Specs, at a price of $2,195. Interested buyers can lock in a spot with a $200 refundable deposit.

A decade in the making #

Snap has been chasing the AR wearables dream for over a decade, starting with its original Spectacles, which were essentially sunglasses with a camera bolted on.

The new Specs represent the most ambitious version yet. These are lightweight, see-through AR glasses. The glasses run on Snap OS 2.0, a purpose-built operating system that supports interaction through voice, gesture, and touch.

On the AI front, Snap has lined up partnerships with OpenAI and Gemini to power intelligent features within the glasses.

Limited run, big ambitions #

Snap appears to be planning an initial production run of around 100,000 units. For context, Apple shipped roughly 500,000 Vision Pro headsets in its first year and still struggled to find a mass audience at $3,499.

Snap established a dedicated subsidiary called Specs Inc. in January 2026, specifically designed to give the AR division more operational independence and capital flexibility.

Before the consumer Specs, Snap released a developer-focused model known as Spectacles ’24, available through a $100 monthly subscription.

The consumer Specs are slated for a fall 2026 launch.

Where Snap fits in the AR race #

The $2,195 price point positions Specs below Apple’s Vision Pro but well above Meta’s Ray-Ban offerings.

Snap’s stock has historically shown volatility around AR announcements.
