The tool, built with React, TypeScript, Python, FastAPI and SQLite, validates each AI recommendation before touching the filesystem and keeps document processing on the user's machine rather than sending files to a cloud API.", "body_md": "*This is a submission for the [Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady](https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week3-2026-10-19)*\n\nI built **SlothTab**, a local-first AI assistant for people who keep saying:\n\n\"I'll organize it later.\"\n\nWe all have that one folder.\n\nDownloads full of:\n\n`IMG_8273.png`` final_final2.pdf``document123.pdf`\nSlothTab lets you drop those files into an inbox and **lets local AI figure out what to do with them**.\n\nIt can:\n\nInstead of spending 15 minutes organizing a folder manually, I can drop everything into SlothTab and let the sloth do the work.\n\nThe goal is simple:\n\n**Do less. Let AI handle the boring parts.**\n\nFor example:\n\n```\nBefore\n\nDownloads/\n├── IMG_8273.png\n├── final_final2.pdf\n├── cloudnotes.txt\n├── receipt.jpg\n├── document123.pdf\n└── screenshot.png\n```\n\nAfter SlothTab:\n\n```\nCollege/\n├── Cloud Computing/\n│ └── cloud-computing-lab.pdf\n│\n└── Notes/\n └── cloud-computing-notes.txt\n\nScreenshots/\n└── cloud-console-screenshot.png\n\nReceipts/\n└── receipt.jpg\n```\n\nAnd hopefully the user is nowhere near the keyboard. 🦥\n\n[https://github.com/neomon-dev/SlothTab.git](https://github.com/neomon-dev/SlothTab.git)\n\nSlothTab is designed to be open and extensible, particularly around the AI layer.\n\nThe AI provider is abstracted so the application isn't tied to one model or one company.\n\nYou can use a local model through:\n\nThat means the model powering SlothTab can be changed without rebuilding the entire application.\n\nSlothTab is built around a **local-first AI architecture**.\n\nThe basic flow looks like this:\n\n```\n 🦥 SlothTab\n │\n ▼\n Local files\n │\n ▼\n File text / image\n extraction\n │\n ▼\n Local AI model\n │\n ▼\n Structured JSON\n │\n ▼\n Safety validation\n │\n ▼\n User approval / Auto Mode\n │\n ▼\n File organization\n```\n\nThe frontend is built with **React + TypeScript**, while the backend uses **Python + FastAPI**.\n\nSQLite is used for local persistence, including activity history and reversible file operations.\n\nFor document processing, SlothTab extracts information locally before sending the relevant content to the configured local model.\n\nThe AI doesn't directly control the filesystem.\n\nInstead, it produces a structured recommendation such as:\n\n```\n{\n \"category\": \"College\",\n \"subcategory\": \"Cloud Computing\",\n \"suggested_filename\": \"cloud-computing-lab.pdf\",\n \"suggested_destination\": \"College/Cloud Computing\",\n \"summary\": \"Instructions for a cloud computing lab.\",\n \"importance\": \"medium\",\n \"confidence\": 0.94\n}\n```\n\nThe application validates that response before performing any operation.\n\nThis separation is important:\n\n```\nAI → Recommendation\n ↓\nValidation\n ↓\nApplication\n ↓\nFile operation\n```\n\nrather than giving the AI direct access to shell commands or filesystem operations.\n\nThis is probably the most important part of SlothTab.\n\nA traditional cloud AI implementation could send my documents to a remote API every time I wanted to organize them.\n\nFor a tool dealing with personal documents, screenshots, assignments, receipts, and potentially sensitive information, I didn't want that to be the default.\n\nWith local/open-weight AI, SlothTab can instead work like this:\n\n```\nMy files\n ↓\nMy laptop\n ↓\nMy local model\n ↓\nMy organized files\n```\n\nThe files don't need to leave my machine.\n\nSlothTab is designed so that document processing can happen locally.\n\nThat's particularly useful for files that I wouldn't want to upload to an external AI service.\n\nOnce the application and model are installed, the core AI workflow can work without an internet connection.\n\nThe assistant doesn't need to call a cloud model just to decide where a PDF belongs.\n\nI'm not locked into one AI provider.\n\nI can experiment with different open-weight models and choose the one that works best for my hardware and workload.\n\nBecause the model and prompts are under my control, I can change how SlothTab behaves.\n\nWant different categories?\n\nChange the configuration.\n\nWant stricter confidence thresholds?\n\nChange them.\n\nWant a different model?\n\nSwap it.\n\nWant to modify the AI's reasoning workflow?\n\nThe code is there.\n\nThere is no requirement to pay a cloud API every time SlothTab processes another document.\n\nThe main computational cost is instead running the model locally.\n\nThat changes the economics of building small AI automations.\n\nThe entire point of SlothTab is to remove the tiny tasks that aren't difficult—but are annoying enough that we keep postponing them.\n\nInstead of:\n\n```\nFind file\n ↓\nOpen file\n ↓\nUnderstand file\n ↓\nChoose folder\n ↓\nRename file\n ↓\nMove file\n ↓\nRepeat × 20\n```\n\nSlothTab turns it into:\n\n```\nDrop files\n ↓\n🦥\n ↓\nReview\n ↓\nDone\n```\n\nThe most satisfying metric isn't how fast the AI responds.\n\nIt's how little **I** have to do.\n\nAnd that's what I wanted from this challenge:\n\n**an AI that rewards laziness rather than demanding more work from me.**\n\nOpen AI isn't interesting to me simply because it's \"free\" or because I can run a model locally.\n\nIt's interesting because it gives developers a different set of possibilities.\n\nWith SlothTab, the AI can become part of the user's computer rather than another website the user has to send their data to.\n\nThe model can be swapped.\n\nThe prompts can be changed.\n\nThe application can work offline.\n\nThe entire pipeline can be inspected and modified.\n\nAnd most importantly...\n\nI don't have to organize my Downloads folder anymore.\n\n**The sloth has it covered. 🦥**", "url":
