A few years ago I built a very simple, though overly complicated, hacker news notification service. I always had dreams for a "bigger" application, where I could follow some people and read what they have to post, or specific topics and get notified with they show up, and if you don't want email, you can just have it sent to an RSS feed, or install it as a PWA and get the option for push notifications. Don't want immediate updates, change them to daily/weekly/monthly digest emails instead.
The old HN Notify got shut down because it was getting to be too much work to maintain my sloppy code when I had other hobbies to play with. And you can read more about that here: https://jeremyaboyd.com/post/sunsetting-hn-notify
Thankfully the rise of agentic coding has allowed these side projects I abandoned to be worked on once more, in the background, while I do the work that actually pays me.
Anyway, enjoy this if you want it. I know not everyone wants to be notified of their replies, and I know there are other services that are similar.
