Shopify announced on September 28 that it has expanded WebMCP, its protocol for letting AI agents interact directly with a storefront's code instead of guessing at screenshots, to cover the checkout itself. According to TechCrunch's report on the rollout, the update adds three new tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. An agent can now read what's in your cart, change the delivery address or shipping option, and then place the order, but only after you authorize the purchase. It works on stores using Shop Pay, and Shopify is turning it on for eligible merchants by default. That's a real jump from where Shopify's agent tools stood a few weeks ago. The earlier version of WebMCP let an agent search a store's catalog and load items into a cart, but a human still had to walk the final steps. Now the agent can carry a purchase from browsing straight through to a submitted order, without you ever loading the checkout page yourself. Shopify isn't rolling this out alone. Meta's Muse, described as a personal AI agent that handles everyday tasks like correspondence and travel bookings, struck a deal with Shopify on September 21 to run agentic checkout through Shop Pay on every Shopify store, a partnership Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke announced directly. A second agent, Instinct, got the same treatment the same day Shopify flipped on checkout access. Notably, Amazon has spent months fighting Perplexity's Comet browser agent in court over shopping access to its site, a legal battle that is still playing out. Card networks, issuers, and platforms are all still working through it, and for now the exposure sits mostly with the merchant. The mismatch is structural. Fraud screening on most stores was built to catch exactly the pattern an agent produces: a checkout completed in seconds, from a data-center IP address, on an account with no browsing history behind it. That's the same fingerprint a card-testing bot leaves. Merchants are already seeing legitimate agent-placed orders get flagged as high risk for that reason alone. And when a dispute does land, the usual chargeback evidence, an IP trail, a device fingerprint, a click-by-click navigation history, doesn't exist in the same form when the buyer was software. New dispute types are showing up that don't fit any existing chargeback reason code: an agent buying the wrong product, or a shopper claiming the agent spent past whatever limit they'd set. None of that has a settled answer yet. Shopify's fix, a buyer-authorization step before complete_checkout fires, is a start, but a click of approval on a summary screen is a thinner paper trail than what card networks currently expect from a disputed purchase. None of this is stopping the rollout. McKinsey has put the agentic commerce opportunity at $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030, and Shopify, running the infrastructure behind more than two million merchant stores, is not going to wait for card networks to finish writing new rules before it takes a cut of that. The merchants who benefit first are the ones already running Shop Pay, since that's the rail Muse and Instinct both plugged into.
