Cowen argues that AI will create new roles for testers of innovations and for workers who collect untapped data from corporate records, historical archives, and other sources. The piece advises professionals to pivot toward tasks that AI cannot easily automate, such as running experiments and feeding raw information into machine learning models.", "body_md": "# Seven ways to avoid losing your job to AI\n\nThat is the theme of [my latest Free Press column](https://www.thefp.com/p/tyler-cowen-seven-ways-to-avoid-losing), here is one excerpt:\n\nPrinciple five:\n\nRun experiments.This is a more general version of the healthcare point. AI will generate so many new ideas and hypotheses, including for drugs and medical devices, but not only. Become a tester. Test new battery designs, new educational techniques, or new methods of conserving valued wildlife.\n\nThe demand for experiments will rise sharply, and most of those cannot be done by robots, at least not anytime soon.\n\nPrinciple six:\n\nGather data.AI is a marvelous tool, but it relies on knowing lots about the world. That can stem from reading the internet,\n\n[watching videos of people folding clothes], and hearing recordings of voices, among many other ways of absorbing information.The more powerful the AI, the higher the returns from feeding it data, because it will make smart and useful inferences from those data. But most data in our world have never been put into AI models. Just consider corporate records, historical archives, referee reports for failed scientific papers, accounts of lab procedures, and much more. Most of that remains virgin territory.\n\nThe next few decades will bring an immense investment in feeding more data into the AIs. So there will be new jobs in gathering environmental data, job safety data, construction site data, corporate and management data, public health data, agricultural data, education data, and much more. Those jobs could be yours.\n\nRecommended.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai", "canonical_source": "https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2026/05/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai", "published_at": "2026-05-27 05:54:07+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-05-27 05:56:09.421460+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-tools", "ai-research", "ai-ethics", "ai-policy"], "entities": ["Tyler Cowen", "Free Press"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/seven-ways-to-avoid-losing-your-job-to-ai.jsonld"}}
