Scaling Pre-Training on Super Smash Bros. Melee An engineer trained HAL, a 247M-parameter causal Transformer, to play Super Smash Bros. Melee using human data only, reaching the top ~1% of human play on the ranked ladder. The model reads the last 256 frames of game state and controller inputs (no pixels) and outputs autoregressive action chunks, replanning at under 10 Hz, and the author reports it is the strongest base Melee model in the world. The work characterizes Melee pre-training scaling laws, finding model FLOPs should scale faster than data, and reports that observation delay hurts more than model size helps.
