# Samsung's new foldables bring more AI to the fold > Source: > Published: 2026-07-22 13:00:00+00:00 Foldables have long challenged what a phone can be. Now Samsung is pushing further, betting that AI features can make the most of the form factor's unique possibilities. On Wednesday, Samsung held its Unpacked event, launching its new Galaxy Z Fold series: the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8. The star of the show was the Galaxy Z Fold8, featuring a 10:16 cover screen when folded and a large 4:3 main display when open. But AI aficionados had just as much reason to be excited, as Samsung leaned on the foldable form factor itself to showcase a handful of new AI features. For instance, the Galaxy Z Flip8, the company's clamshell foldable, now has a more functional outer screen called the FlexWindow, letting users more easily access apps and, in turn, AI features. Without actually opening the phone, users can use the outer screen for many of the same things possible on the inner display–including quicker access to Gemini assistance. Users can also long-press the power button to launch Gemini's task automation directly from the FlexWindow. The task automation feature itself got an upgrade. It launched in beta at Samsung Unpacked back in January and allowed Gemini to complete an action, such as ordering an Uber, agentically from beginning to end. Now it supports more than 40 popular apps. Gemini can also now understand what is on your screen as context to perform the action. In my demo, the user was able to ask Gemini to book him a hotel for the place pictured on screen, and Gemini was able to start the process without him having to explicitly say "Paris." Also capitalizing on form factor, Samsung's Now Nudge AI feature suggests actions to make better use of the foldables' large inner display based on context. In the demo, when a message read "Come have dinner with Jenny and me this Tuesday," Now Nudge suggested adding it to the calendar, with a split-screen icon next to it that, when tapped, opened the calendar app with the event details already populated in split view. Samsung also shared more information about the intelligent eyewear launch in partnership with Google, including more frame designs from both Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, but I will go over that in a separate article. The highlight there is that it'll be able to operate seamlessly with Samsung's ecosystem of devices, including the newly launched smartphones and watches, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9. ## Our Deeper *View* Foldable phones haven't yet reached mainstream adoption, but the category is steadily gaining market share. Its core audience is people seeking to maximize productivity, carrying a large screen in a form factor that's still compact and pocketable like a regular phone. But I think the key to winning over more people is adding compelling features that simply can't exist on a normal phone, like multitasking and split-screen use. That's where something like Now Nudge suggesting split-screen or the added capabilities for the Flex Window matters: by proactively surfacing these capabilities, it helps people actually discover and use them, rather than letting them sit unused, and the more people experience that value firsthand, the more likely they are to talk about it and bring others into the category. Of course, the category as a whole is expected to get a boost from Apple entering the category in the fall as well.
