According to industry reports citing The Elec, Samsung Electronics requested panel proposals measuring under 0.2 inches across to ensure the component fits discreetly inside conventional eyeglass temples. Rather than chasing a power-hungry, high-resolution panel designed for video playback, Samsung is reportedly prioritizing battery endurance and text readability by exploring a 4-bit grayscale setup offering 16 brightness levels.
These modern displays are optimized specifically for glancing interactions:
- Directional navigation arrows.
- Incoming notifications and system alerts.
- Real-time conversational AI prompts and contextual icons.
Panel tech: Weighing OLEDoS against LEDoS
Samsung Display is currently weighing two primary silicon-backed display technologies: OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) and Micro-LED-on-Silicon (LEDoS). While LEDoS offers high peak brightness suitable for harsh outdoor sunlight, its production yields remain challenging.
Consequently, White OLEDoS is emerging as the leading candidate. By combining white OLED emitters with micro color filters, the approach avoids the steep manufacturing costs and yield penalties associated with direct-emission RGB panels, keeping unit pricing viable for consumer adoption.
