Samsung has never launched three flagship foldables at the same time. Until today. At a packed event in London, the company unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 in a single presentation, all shipping August 7. It's the kind of move you make when you're not just selling a phone but trying to shift the category.
The Z Fold 8 itself is the widest Fold Samsung has built: a redesigned chassis that addresses the longstanding criticism that its book-style foldables were too narrow to use as a proper tablet. Under the hood, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 drives the device, the battery has grown from 4,400mAh to 5,000mAh, wired charging hits 45W, and the ultrawide camera jumps to 50MP. At $1,899 for the base 12GB and 256GB configuration, it is the most accessible the flagship Fold line has ever been. The Ultra, by contrast, starts at $2,099 and targets the productivity end of the market with a taller aspect ratio and a triple-camera array on the back that more closely resembles the Z Fold 7's proportions.
The hardware upgrades are real, but they're not the story Samsung wants you to take home. That story is Gemini Intelligence, arriving on these devices before it lands on Google's own Pixel 11, as Digital Trends noted. Samsung is shipping One UI 9 on Android 17, with Gemini Notebook pre-installed and an AI Assistant Activity dashboard that gives users a live view of automations running across their apps. Gemini can navigate more than 40 apps and services as an agent, meaning it can thread together tasks across your calendar, your messages, your files, without you manually switching between them. For a foldable with a large inner display, that matters in a way it doesn't on a slab phone. You can have two apps open and let Gemini work across both simultaneously.
This is where Samsung's bet gets interesting, and where it diverges clearly from Apple. Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 and 17 lines is tightly integrated with Apple's own apps and Siri's architecture. It's capable, but it operates within Apple's walled garden. Gemini's agent approach is designed to be messier and broader: reaching across third-party apps, Google's own ecosystem, and Samsung's DeX desktop mode in a way that treats the phone as a platform for running tasks rather than just completing them. Whether that breadth translates into reliable daily usefulness is the real test. Frankly, Apple's approach has been more polished on release. But Samsung is shipping first and shipping on hardware that has the screen real estate to actually take advantage of multi-app AI workflows.
CNN's analysis of today's event put it plainly: Samsung is trying to outmaneuver Apple's cool factor before Apple's foldable iPhone even arrives. According to reporting from Korea JoongAng Daily, Samsung's pricing strategy is deliberate, trimming the Z Fold 8's entry price while raising the Ultra's, specifically to stake out territory ahead of what analysts expect will be Apple's foldable debut in 2027.
Can three launches at once push foldables past the tipping point? #
Foldable phone shipments are projected to grow 21% in 2026, but analysts cited by multiple outlets remain skeptical that the form factor will ever achieve the scale of a standard smartphone, largely because of price. Samsung's counter-argument is essentially this: if you bring the entry price down, widen the device so it actually works as a tablet, and give it an AI layer that a flat-screen phone can't match in practice, the math changes.
There's a real case for that. The wider design finally closes the gap between the folded and unfolded experience. And the $1,899 price point, while still steep, is lower than what most consumers expected after chip cost pressures pushed other configurations higher. Samsung, as CNBC reported today, has raised storage tier prices by roughly $80 each, so the base model carrying the flagship price is a deliberate anchor.
The simultaneous three-device launch also changes the retail picture. Carriers and retailers now have an entry option at $1,199 for the Z Flip 8, a mid-tier at $1,899, and a premium tier at $2,099, giving them a foldable lineup that spans a wider slice of the premium market. That's a harder shelf to ignore than a single flagship sitting at the top.
Whether Gemini's agent capabilities deliver reliably at launch is something the first weeks of shipping will answer. Samsung's track record on software at launch has been inconsistent. But the hardware case for the Z Fold 8 is the strongest the line has made, and positioning it as the AI-native device in the foldable category, before Apple enters, is the only window Samsung has to set that narrative.
