Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, published a blog post on June 10, 2025, titled “The Gentle Singularity,” in which he made arguably the boldest claim of his career. Humanity, he wrote, has crossed the “event horizon” of artificial intelligence development, and the process of building digital superintelligence has officially begun.
“We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started,” Altman wrote. “Humanity is close to building digital superintelligence.”
