ASUS opened pre-orders at Gamescom. The OLED panel is real, the price jump is $300, and the silicon underneath has not moved.
ASUS has opened pre-orders for the ROG Xbox Ally X20, and the number everyone will fixate on is $1,299.99 for the standalone handheld, shipping October 15. That is exactly $300 more than the ROG Xbox Ally X that ASUS still lists at $999.99 – and both machines run the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme.
So what does the premium actually buy? A screen, mostly. The X20 drops the Ally X’s 7-inch LCD for a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED at 120Hz with FreeSync Premium Pro, rated around 600 nits in normal use and peaking at 1,400 nits in HDR. The outgoing panel topped out near 500 nits and had the black levels you would expect from an edge-lit LCD. Anyone who has tried to play something dim and moody on a handheld in a sunlit room already knows which of those two figures matters.
Everything else is carried over: 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, an 80Wh battery. The controls get a genuine revision – TMR joysticks, and a D-pad you can physically switch between four-way and eight-way. ASUS has also dressed the thing up for the ROG division’s 20th anniversary with a translucent black shell, gold internal hardware and a badge.
The bundle arithmetic is worth doing yourself #
The second price is the loud one: $2,499.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle, which adds the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch, a 68W adapter and a custom Pelican Protector case. ASUS will sell those glasses on their own for $799 from mid-September.
Subtract the handheld and the glasses from the bundle and you are left with roughly $400 for a grip case, a charger and a hard case. That is not a bundle discount in any conventional sense. It is a collector’s box priced like one, and ASUS is entitled to sell it – but the earlier reporting that the AR glasses would be mandatory turned out to be wrong, and that is the genuinely good news here. You can buy the handheld on its own.
What it does not change #
Frame rates. Same SoC, same memory, same power envelope, so anyone hoping the X20 would finally push a handheld past the Z2 Extreme’s ceiling should recalibrate. OLED also complicates the battery story rather than simplifying it: emissive panels sip power on dark content and drink it on bright HDR, so the 80Wh pack may last longer or shorter than the Ally X depending entirely on what you are playing. Nobody has independent runtime or thermal numbers yet, and until somebody does, treat ASUS’s claims as claims.
At $1,299 the X20 lands in strange company. It is roughly double a Steam Deck OLED and well clear of most Windows handhelds, while running the same chip as a $999 sibling sitting on the same shelf. The panel is a real upgrade and OLED on a handheld is transformative in a way spec sheets undersell. Whether it is a $300 upgrade is a question every buyer gets to answer alone.
