Roblox developer adds Nvidia DLSS 5 and gives avatars disturbingly human faces

Roblox developer Hoofer used Nvidia's leaked DLSS 5 renderer to give Roblox avatars photorealistic human faces, sharing footage on September 1 that shows blocky characters with realistic skin and eyes. The experiment is unofficial and does not indicate native DLSS 5 support for Roblox, which is separately developing its own Roblox Reality project for photorealistic visuals, expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

Roblox developer Hoofer has used Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 renderer to give the platform’s blocky avatars eerily realistic human faces.

Nvidia announced DLSS 5 in March, describing it as a neural rendering system capable of adding photorealistic lighting and materials to games. Unlike earlier versions that primarily improved resolution and performance, DLSS 5 can drastically alter how characters, clothing, hair, and environments appear.

The technology is not scheduled for its wider release until fall 2026, but unfinished DLSS 5 files were recently discovered inside the early access build of NBA 2K27. Modders quickly began forcing it into games including Skyrim, Control, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

That was followed by an anime fan using DLSS 5 to transform characters from Danganronpa, Higurashi When They Cry, and other games into unsettlingly realistic people.

On September 1, Roblox developer Hoofer decided to see what would happen when the same technology was applied to Roblox.

“I added DLSS 5 to Roblox… it’s……… ‘beautiful,’” Hoofer wrote, directing viewers toward even more examples shared in the replies.

The footage keeps the avatars’ familiar rectangular bodies and square heads, but DLSS 5 attempts to cover them with realistic skin, detailed eyes, facial shadows, and other human features.

Environments receive more natural-looking lighting and materials, but the characters land firmly in the uncanny valley. Their rigid Roblox proportions remain intact beneath the photorealistic makeover, leaving them looking more like people trapped inside blocky costumes.

Hoofer, who has worked on the Roblox sandbox experience Oaklands, shared several additional clips showing how the renderer handles different characters and environments.

The experiment is unofficial and does not mean Roblox is receiving native DLSS 5 support. It does, however, arrive as Roblox pursues a surprisingly similar idea of its own.

In April, the company revealed Roblox Reality, an internal project designed to layer photorealistic visuals over Roblox experiences using its game engine, cloud infrastructure, and a generative “Super Upsampler.”

Roblox hopes to release an early version of that technology in late 2026 or early 2027. Roblox Reality is separate from Hoofer’s DLSS 5 experiment, but the viral footage offers an unsettling example of what can happen when neural rendering meets the platform’s deliberately simple art style.

The results also highlight the same artistic concerns that sparked backlash when Nvidia first revealed DLSS 5: adding more realistic detail does not necessarily make every game look better.
