The Rhode Island legislature passed HB 7538, known as the Health and Safety – Use of Artificial Intelligence by Healthcare Providers Notification Act. The bill was signed by the Governor on June 22, 2026.
Under the new law, any healthcare provider or facility must inform patients if artificial intelligence is being used to memorialize (record) their visits. This requirement applies to all patient interactions where AI is employed for documentation purposes.
Because the effective date has not been set, the law is not yet in force. Until an effective date is announced, the notification requirement remains pending implementation.
