RAG Explained Simply: Build a Document Q&A with SQLite A developer published a hands-on guide showing how to build a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) document Q&A system over a small shop's help pages using only Python and SQLite's FTS5 full-text search, with no external service or dependencies. The walkthrough explains RAG through a librarian analogy, covers when retrieval is worth it versus pasting documents into a prompt, and includes a script that writes sample help documents and an offline-testable retrieval pipeline. A language model knows a lot, but it hasn't read your returns policy. Ask it how long customers have to return an item, and it will give you a confident answer that may have nothing to do with your shop. The fix is to hand the model the right pages before it answers. That's what people mean by RAG, and it's simpler than the name suggests. This guide explains it with a library analogy, then builds a small working version over your own documents with Python and SQLite. There's no extra service and nothing to install, and you can test it offline with a stand-in for the model. A support chatbot that answers from your help pages is the classic use. If you're not sure how that differs from an assistant or an agent, I explain the terms in AI agent vs assistant vs chatbot https://procwire.com/blog/ai-agent-vs-assistant-vs-chatbot . Imagine you ask a librarian a question about your town's recycling rules. A bad librarian answers from memory. They sound sure, and sometimes they're wrong. A good librarian walks to the shelves, pulls out the two or three most relevant pages, reads them, and then answers, pointing to the page numbers. If the library has nothing on the subject, they say so. RAG makes a language model behave like the good librarian. The name stands for retrieval-augmented generation, and it has three steps: The model's own knowledge is still there. But now it has your pages open in front of it. Not always. If all your documents together fit in a few pages, you can paste them into every prompt. That's simpler, with nothing to build and nothing to get wrong. It costs more per question as the text grows, though prompt caching can soften that. RAG earns its place when you have more text than fits in a prompt, when the documents change often, or when you want to pay only for the pages each question needs. It's also how AI agents get a kind of long-term memory. I wrote about that in agent memory: short-term vs long-term https://procwire.com/blog/agent-memory-short-term-vs-long-term . A small shop's help centre, with a question-answering tool on top: python import sqlite3; sqlite3.connect ":memory:" .execute "CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE t USING fts5 x " ; print "FTS5 is available" Save this as make docs.py and run it. It writes five short help pages into a docs folder. Use your own documents later. python from pathlib import Path DOCS = { "returns.md": """ Returns Refunds You can return most items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund.
