Qualcomm (QCOM ) has finished buying Modular, the AI infrastructure company behind the Mojo programming language, closing the transaction on July 29, 2026, roughly five weeks after the two sides announced it. Chris Lattner, Modular’s co-founder and chief executive, takes on the role of executive vice president of advanced AI software and platforms at the chipmaker.
The currency is Qualcomm equity. Under a definitive agreement signed June 21, 2026, Qualcomm expects to issue up to 19.2 million shares of its common stock to Modular’s equity owners, according to the company’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Those shares are issued as a private placement rather than a registered offering, so Modular’s investors and employees receive restricted Qualcomm stock rather than paper they can sell into the market on day one. Closing adjustments can still move the final count.
What Modular’s investors receive #
Modular raised $380 million across three rounds after Lattner and Tim Davis, both previously at Google, founded the company in 2022. Its last private mark came in September 2025, when Modular said it had raised $250 million at a $1.6 billion valuation in a round led by Thomas Tull’s US Innovative Technology fund, with DFJ Growth joining as a new investor and existing backers General Catalyst and Greylock participating.
GV led Modular’s first financing in 2022 and published its own account of the outcome. Partner Dave Munichiello wrote that the firm’s earlier infrastructure investments, among them SambaNova and Determined AI, had convinced it that the software layer would hold the more durable value as AI hardware fragmented into specialized architectures.
Modular’s product line survives the transaction, which is the clearest signal that Qualcomm bought a business rather than a team. Three things carry over:

Why Qualcomm bought the software layer #
Qualcomm announced the deal on June 24, 2026, the same day it used its investor day to raise its fiscal 2029 targets: $40 billion in non-handset revenue, roughly twice the prior goal, with more than $15 billion of that from data center. Handsets, the business Qualcomm is known for, are projected to supply about a third of chip revenue by then, alongside automotive, robotics and the industrial edge deployments the company is targeting.
Modular is the software half of that plan. Its platform runs models across CPU, GPU, NPU and custom chip designs without rewriting code for each accelerator, which is the integration cost that has kept challenger silicon from converting design wins into deployed inference capacity. Qualcomm’s framing in the earlier announcement was direct about the economics: performance-per-watt drives the cost of inference, and cost determines what scales. It is the same argument building across the sector, where the maturity of the software stack increasingly decides which accelerators get used.
“With Modular’s world-class engineering team, we’re enabling a new and open approach to AI software development, enabling AI to run efficiently across any hardware while maximizing performance,” Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s president and chief executive, said in the completion announcement.
What the combined stack does next #
The near-term job is day-zero performance. Qualcomm said in June 2026 that Modular’s platform would let new Qualcomm AI hardware run well from launch instead of waiting for a developer ecosystem to form around it, and the company’s data center roadmap is what that promise gets measured against.
Buying the toolchain outright also puts Qualcomm in a different position from peers spending capital at the model layer, from Nvidia’s stake in Safe Superintelligence to AMD’s $5 billion Anthropic bet. Qualcomm now owns the compiler, the serving framework and the language, plus the team that wrote them, at a company that had grown past 130 people by late 2025.
Lattner’s remit spans Qualcomm’s platforms from edge devices to the data center, and Mojo, MAX and Modular Cloud keep shipping on rival vendors’ chips while Qualcomm’s own AI accelerators come to market.
