Qi2 upgrade may bring 50W wireless charging to future Google Pixel, iPhone models The Wireless Power Consortium is developing a 50W wireless charging standard based on Qi2 technology, led by Xiaomi, with potential adoption by Google Pixel and iPhone models as early as 2028. One of the big advantages of Qi2 and its magnetic alignment is support for faster 25W charging speeds, but the organization behind the standard is working on even faster 50W charging for future devices, which could include future generations of Pixel, iPhone, and more. Qi2 was introduced in 2023, with Qi2 25W hitting the scene in 2025 just ahead of the Google Pixel 10’s debut https://9to5google.com/2025/07/23/qi2-25w-charging-speed-android-smartphones/ . Adoption of the proper version of the standard with magnets built into the phone has been abysmal among Android brands, but that hasn’t stopped the Wireless Power Consortium WPC , the organization behind the Qi standard, from building on it. ITHome reports https://m.ithome.com/html/969104.htm that, as a part of the WPC’s recent “off-cycle meeting,” the organization opened the door to 50W wireless charging speeds based on Qi and Qi2 technology. The meeting was held in Bejing at Xiaomi’s headquarters, with Xiaomi being the leader in pushing 50W speeds as a part of the Qi standard using a “small inductance, low voltage, high power” solution. While much of this updated standard is not yet finalized, it’s “basically” most of the way there, with updates potentially coming as soon as 2028. Whenever it does arrive, 50W charging as a part of the Qi/Qi2 standard would be a huge boost to wireless charging. Xiaomi, of course, would likely be first in line for the update seeing as it’s been the brand putting in the work to make it a part of the standard, but it stands to reason that Google Pixel and iPhone could follow as the two brands most actively using and pushing Qi’s advancements in their devices in recent years – the vast majority of other Android brands have largely ignored the Qi2 wave https://9to5google.com/2026/06/07/seriously-how-do-we-not-have-more-android-phones-with-qi2-yet/ despite mass adoption from accessory makers.
