The combined entity will support agentic AI workflows by integrating Prefect's FastMCP framework and Dagster's declarative approach, ensuring deterministic and auditable processes. The deal aims to provide an open-source foundation for automating AI tasks with reliable context.", "body_md": "Prefect, a provider of a platform for automating workflows using the Python programming language, today revealed it has agreed to acquire Dagster Labs, a provider of a declarative orchestration platform used to build, schedule, and monitor data pipelines.\n\nBoth companies have developed automation platforms that are based on Apache Airflow, open-source software that is used to programmatically author, schedule, and monitor batch-oriented workflows.\n\nPrefect CEO Jeremiah Lowin said the combined entity will provide the foundation organizations need to automate agentic artificial intelligence (AI) workflows in much the same way they currently automate workflows and pipelines.\n\nIn addition to providing a workflow orchestration platform, Prefect also developed FastMCP, a framework for building Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers using Python that has been downloaded more than 92 million times. Anthropic also made FastMCP as its official MCP software development kit (SDK).\n\nThe Dagster orchestration framework adds a declarative approach to creating data pipelines that is more accessible to a wider range of IT teams. While elements of the orchestration framework developed by Dagster Labs will be incorporated into the platform provided by Prefect, the combined entity will continue to make the orchestration framework developed by Dagster Labs available as a standalone open source offering.\n\nDagster Labs founder Nick Schrock and CEO Pete Hunt, once the deal is closed, will serve as strategic advisors to Prefect and will remain active in the open-source community, with Prefect, which is already profitable, providing the financial resources needed to sustain the Dagster community, noted Lowin.\n\nThe combined portfolio of the two companies ensures AI agents’ access in a way that ensures the level of context needed to optimally automate tasks is achieved and maintained, said Lowin. Prefect and FastMCP, for example, capture code as it is written, while Dagster provides a declarative method for describing what work should be produced at compile time. IT teams, as a result, gain a natural way to write their code and a rigorous way to reason about its outcomes. “You will be able to set up checkpoints in workflows,” says Lowin. “It will be repeatable and auditable.”\n\nThe end result is a means to ensure that workflows are as deterministic as possible using AI technologies that are inherently probabilistic that, in the absence of any context, might not ever complete the same task the same way twice.\n\nThere is, of course, no shortage of options when it comes to automating workflows. Prefect, however, is making a case for an open source approach that, in addition to lowering costs, is also based on a modern platform that enables IT teams to manage pipelines as code.\n\nUltimately, the next wave of automation will be focused on making sure that AI agents have access to the right context needed at the right time. The more context that can be provided reliably, the less need there is for an AI agent to consume tokens to determine it. Instead, more tokens can be allocated to completing the actual task. The challenge then becomes identifying the sources of data that AI agents are going to need to access in a way they can most easily understand.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation", "canonical_source": "https://techstrong.ai/features/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation/", "published_at": "2026-07-13 12:00:43+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-13 12:24:30.912001+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-agents", "ai-infrastructure", "ai-startups", "developer-tools"], "entities": ["Prefect", "Dagster Labs", "Jeremiah Lowin", "Nick Schrock", "Pete Hunt", "FastMCP", "Anthropic", "Apache Airflow"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/prefect-to-acquire-dagster-labs-to-drive-ai-workflow-automation.jsonld"}}
