The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. at Francis Beach, also known as Kelly Beach, according to San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Gretchen Spiker. The beach is part of Half Moon Bay State Beach.
Spiker said a 20-year-old woman was lying in the sand when she was run over by a California State Parks lifeguard vehicle. She was treated at the scene before being taken to an area hospital.
The woman’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Spiker.
Spiker said initial reports indicated the driver “may have been distracted.”
California State Parks spokesperson Adeline Yee identified the driver as a seasonal lifeguard.
The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation into the incident, Yee said.
