# Pony.ai Targets 100,000 L4 Light-Duty Trucks

On August 6, Pony.ai set a target of deploying 100,000 Level 4 autonomous light-duty trucks by 2030, according to a company post. It also expects 500 to 1,000 Gen-4 autonomous heavy-duty trucks to be deployed in China over the next two to three years, focusing on long-haul freight, bulk commodities and port logistics.

Pony.ai has set a longer-term target of **100,000 Level 4 autonomous light-duty trucks by 2030**, according to an August 6 post on its corporate blog. The Chinese autonomous-driving company also expects **500 to 1,000 Gen-4 autonomous heavy-duty trucks** to be deployed in China over the next two to three years.

The heavy-truck deployments are intended for three reported operating scenarios: long-haul freight, bulk commodity transportation and port logistics. He Xing, Pony.ai vice president and head of its Robotruck business, discussed the targets at an August 3 media briefing, according to Pony.ai and CnEVPost.

### Separate targets for heavy and light trucks

The 100,000-unit goal applies specifically to L4 light-duty trucks, not the heavy-duty fleet. Automotive World reported that Pony.ai had operated about 200 trucks as of November 2025, had transported more than one billion tonne-kilometres of freight, and recorded Robotruck revenue of $10.2 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 31% year over year.

Pony.ai began developing autonomous trucks in 2018, initially using hand-built prototypes. Its August 6 post describes later vehicle generations as moving toward automotive-grade production through partnerships with truck manufacturers. Automotive World reported that Pony.ai developed its heavy-duty trucks with Sany Truck, while Sinotrans supports logistics operations across the network.

Pony.ai launched its first L4 light-duty truck in April 2026 with CATL, according to Automotive World. The outlet reported that the vehicle has about 18 cubic metres of cargo capacity and that Pony.ai estimated a 40% to 50% reduction in per-kilometre operating costs once it operates fully driverlessly.

### Hardware cost is central to the scale claim

Pony.ai and CnEVPost reported that autonomous-driving hardware costs for the Gen-4 heavy truck are about **70% lower** than for the prior generation. The company described its scaling targets as dependent on a more mature autonomous-driving system, lower hardware costs, redundant automotive-grade vehicle platforms, and deeper work with vehicle manufacturers and logistics operators.

He told Automotive World that Pony.ai had waited for a point at which the cost of building an L4 Robotruck was lower, adding that declining hardware costs benefited both heavy- and light-duty vehicles. CnEVPost reported that the Gen-4 heavy truck is designed for 20,000 operating hours or up to one million kilometres of service.

The distinction between a limited heavy-truck rollout and a much larger light-duty objective is material for practitioners assessing autonomous-freight deployment claims. Long-haul, port and bulk-haul operations can use comparatively repeatable routes and controlled operational conditions, while a fleet goal at 100,000 vehicles depends on vehicle integration, sensor and compute supply, fleet operations, safety assurance and regulatory permissions at scale.

More broadly, autonomous-vehicle companies pursuing comparable commercial deployments commonly rely on automotive-grade integration rather than retrofit prototypes, because durability, redundancy, maintenance and unit economics become as consequential as driving-model performance. Pony.ai's published targets provide milestones against which the commercial maturity of its Robotruck program can be evaluated, but they remain forward-looking deployment objectives rather than completed fleet totals.

## Key Points

- 1Pony.ai reported a 2030 target of 100,000 L4 light-duty autonomous trucks, far exceeding its near-term heavy-truck deployment range.
- 2The company expects 500 to 1,000 Gen-4 heavy trucks in China within two to three years, focused on freight and port routes.
- 3Across autonomous freight, lower hardware costs and automotive-grade vehicle integration often determine whether technically proven systems can scale commercially.

## Scoring Rationale

The reported targets are notable for autonomous-driving and logistics practitioners because they pair near-term heavy-truck deployments with an unusually large 2030 light-duty fleet objective. The story is forward-looking rather than a completed product launch, and deployment remains dependent on operational, cost and regulatory execution.
