The gaming startup's new tool integrates with Unity and Godot, cutting manual fixes in half during prototype development
Game development has always been a grind. Building, testing, debugging, and iterating on even a simple prototype can eat weeks of developer time. Playco thinks it has a shortcut, and it runs on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra.
The gaming startup has built Playbot, an AI-powered integrated development environment that plugs directly into popular game engines like Unity and Godot. Rather than replacing developers, the tool works alongside them, handling scene editing, game testing, and change validation in parallel with existing workflows. According to an OpenAI case study published on September 3, 2026, the results so far have been striking: a 50% reduction in manual fixes during prototyping.
From grey box to game-ready #
Using Playbot powered by Astra, the team constructed three fully themed game prototypes from a single unthemed “grey box” foundation. Most of those themed prototypes worked correctly on the first attempt. Joao Vieira, Playco’s Lead Product Engineer, noted that the initial prototype quality exceeded expectations. Adjustments after the AI’s first pass were largely confined to gameplay preferences rather than fundamental fixes.
What Astra brings to the table #
Spatial reasoning stands out as a key upgrade. Game environments are inherently three-dimensional, and an AI that can understand how objects relate to each other in space is far more useful than one that merely generates code.
UI responsiveness within Unity also saw notable improvement. Bug detection and player experience iteration round out the core enhancements.
