# Perplexity launches Portable Computer for Pro and Max subscribers on NVIDIA DGX Spark

The local-first AI agent keeps sensitive data on your hardware and only reaches for the cloud when you say so

Perplexity AI just shipped a product that flips the default assumption of modern AI tools. Instead of sending every query to a distant data center and hoping for the best, the new Portable Computer runs directly on NVIDIA’s DGX Spark hardware, processing tasks locally before ever touching the cloud.

The feature is available now for Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers.

## What Portable Computer actually does

Portable Computer is a local version of Perplexity Computer, the company’s AI agent platform. It runs on NVIDIA’s DGX Spark, a desktop system that packs 1 petaflop of AI performance into a form factor that sits on your desk rather than in a server rack.

The core pitch is privacy by default. The system handles orchestration, file searching, and planning tasks entirely on-device. It only escalates to cloud resources when the user explicitly approves the handoff.

Local tasks reportedly won’t consume usage credits. The initial release supports Linux, with a Windows version expected to follow. Perplexity’s broader Computer product has been rolling out in stages: the original Perplexity Computer launched on February 25, 2026, Mac-specific versions arrived in April 2026, and Windows support came in July 2026. Portable Computer follows that same platform-by-platform cadence.

## The hardware underneath

NVIDIA’s DGX Spark is the engine making this possible. The system launched in October 2025, designed as a compact desktop AI workstation. It uses NVIDIA’s unified-memory architecture, which lets the system share memory efficiently between the CPU and GPU.

## Pricing and access

Portable Computer is bundled into existing subscription tiers. Perplexity Pro runs $20 per month, or roughly $17 per month on an annual plan. The Max tier costs $200 per month, dropping to around $167 per month with annual billing.

That’s the software side. The hardware cost is separate. NVIDIA’s DGX Spark is a premium system aimed at professionals and enterprises, putting the total investment for a Portable Computer setup firmly in the prosumer-to-enterprise category.
